This programme is designed to give you an advanced knowledge of linguistics and language acquisition and to provide the research skills necessary for carrying out independent research in language acquisition or applied linguistics.
This course is run from the School of Modern Languages with expertise from internationally recognized scholars in the School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics. Its focus is on the processes involved in the acquisition of language, either as a mother tongue or a foreign language.
The programme provides foundation modules in language acquisition, research methodology and general linguistics, which then enable you to follow more specialised modules in the area of your choice.
You take compulsory modules (60 credits) which cover: introduction to language acquisition (20 credits); research methodology in language acquisition (20 credits); English sentence structure (10 credits); phonetics and phonology (10 credits).
You then select 60 credits from a very wide range of options in many areas of linguistics and language acquisition: linguistics (e.g. syntax, morphology, phonology, discourse, pragmatics, semantics, psycholinguistics); language acquisition (e.g. first language acquisition, cross-linguistic issues in second language syntax, phonology in second language acquisition, acquisition of language and literacy by immigrants), sociolinguistics (e.g. language variation, world Englishes), applied/educational linguistics (e.g. TESOL, computer-assisted language learning, linguistic profiling, bilingual education, cross-cultural communication, curriculum design, pedagogical grammar); or research methodology (e.g. fieldwork, corpora, computational linguistics). You also complete a dissertation (60 credits).
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testNormally an upper-second-class Honours degree in a foreign language, linguistics or other relevant subject (eg psychology, English, cognitive science). Candidates without this qualification may be interviewed to assess their suitability on the basis of a sample of written work and/or oral discussion. Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 7.0, TOEFL 100 (Internet-based) or 600 (paper-based), or equivalent. Applicants whose IELTS score is between 6.0 and 7.0, or equivalent, at the time of application must complete an appropriate pre-sessional English language course at INTO Newcastle University.
