This one-year intensive programme provides you with the opportunity to study linguistics as applied to European languages, especially French, German, or Spanish.
The programme is suited for students with a first degree (BA or equivalent) in a European language other than English who want to specialise in the scientific study of that language. The programme can lead to an academic career, while also being attractive for employers in business, media, and journalism .
This programme draws on the expertise of linguists in the School of Modern Languages, specializing in French, German, and Spanish, and linguists in the School of English Literature, Language, and Linguistics, who offer general linguistics courses. Newcastle University has one of the largest communities of linguists in the UK and beyond, all housed in our newly established Centre for Research in Linguistics and Language Sciences (CRiLLS) . Students enjoy access to a large variety of events, such as a thriving seminar series and the yearly Newcastle Postgraduate Conference in Theoretical and Applied Linguistics
You study taught modules (120 credits) and write a dissertation (60 credits). The compulsory modules (40 credits) cover: phonetics and phonology; sentence structure; and research methods in languages and linguistics. In addition, you must choose one or two 20-credit modules from: German and English word analysis; semantic change in French; syntax and history of Spanish. Your remaining 40 or 60 credits are chosen from optional modules. The selection of modules is extensive and covers syntax, phonology and morphology, semantics and pragmatics, language acquisition, sociolinguistics, methods, and history.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
