The aim of the programme is to enable dentists to acquire advanced skills and knowledge in the field of restorative dentistry, integrating theory with practice. It provides the foundations for: enhanced general dental practice; specialist practice (overseas); specialist training in the restorative monospecialities of endodontology, periodontology and prosthodontics (subject to availability, the first two years of a four-year programme); clinical academia; community dental services.

The aim is to provide advanced training in Restorative Dentistry For applicants interested in Monospeciality training the course provides a two year foundation for the 3/4 year programmes in Endodontics, Periodontics and Prosthodontics.

The course has an excellent international reputation built over many years by dedicated teachers and renowned research workers. It has been well received by both home and overseas students and has been improved by extension to two years allowing a more complete spectrum of clinical and academic activity to be provided as well as more time to complete and publish your research project. Contents

The programme is divided into three areas: academic training; patient management and laboratory skills; a laboratory or clinically-based project leading to a dissertation. Subject elements include: conservation; endodontics; periodontology; prosthodontics; dental materials science; interrelated subjects (including Temporomandibular Disorders); statistics; dissertation writing. Clinical skills courses include an operative technique course; practical work on a clinical simulator; die and model construction, waxing, casting and finishing; occlusion and restorations; a partial denture course and implant course.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Requirements

A dental degree recognised by the General Dental Council as being sufficient for the purposes of temporary registration. Two or more years of experience at the start of the programme is preferred. Candidates whose first language is not English require a minimum of IELTS 6.5 (in each section), TOEFL 90 (Internet-based) or 577 (paper-based), or equivalent. The selection committee may at its discretion recommend a period of pre-sessional English training with INTO Newcastle University. You must have the required immunisation against blood-borne viral disease and must not have any disease which would constitute a hazard to patients otherwise you will not be allowed clinical access. There is no formal interview for entry to the MSc, although applicants are encouraged to visit the School of Dental Sciences to discuss their studies. You may not transfer to a Higher Specialist Training programme whilst enrolled on the MSc.
