Statistics and statistical expertise is needed in virtually any field of human activity - in business and industry, in government policymaking and for efficient operation of the public sector.

A focus on statistical practice and statistics as a profession is central to the program. Hence, one key component is the Statistical consulting modules where students meet practitioners and work on real projects. At the same time the program does not compromise on academic rigour and provides a good preparation for students who want to pursue a PhD degree. The main goal of the program is that students will gain a solid foundation in statistical theory, methods and practice. The students will be able to independently design and conduct statistical projects and act as statistical consultants to subject matter specialists. The program is taught entirely in English. The first year consists of required courses and provides a solid foundation in statistical theory and statistical practice with courses in probability and inference, computational statistics, econometrics, sampling, Bayesian statistics and statistical consulting. The second year continues with additional courses in statistical consulting, econometrics and sampling and offers a specialization towards Econometrics or Official Statistics/Sampling. The thesis work (corresponding to one semester of full time study) is initiated towards the end of the third semester when students take courses in parallel with the thesis work. This mode continues for the first half of the fourth semester whereas the second half is devoted solely to thesis work. Students who wish to finish with at one-year masters degree takes fewer courses during the second semester of the first year and, instead, writes a thesis corresponding to one half semester of full time study.

Career
The Master in Applied Statistics prepares students for a wide range of careers as well as PhD studies in Statistics. Recent graduates have, for example, found work in statistical agencies, the financial sector, pharmaceutical companies or continued towards a PhD degree.

Contents

During semester 1 the basics necessary for further studies are introduced: statistical theory and methods for effective statistical computation through the courses Mathematics for Economics and Statistics; Statistical Theory I, Probability; Statistical Theory II, Inference; and Computational Statistics.

Semester 2 provides further basics for continued studies. The courses in econometrics mainly discuss regression models and the problems that can arise when studying observational data. The Bayesian approach to statistical inference is introduced and the basics of sampling are covered. In the course Statistical Consulting I, the statistician's role is practiced.

During semester 3, four courses are taken. The course Model Assisted Survey Sampling II provides further knowledge of sampling and the course Micro Econometrics offers further knowledge of analysis of micro data. In addition, the course Non-response, discussing estimation problems due to non-response, is taken. A maximum of two out of these three courses can be swapped for any course from the university's selection of courses within second-cycle statistics. Students also take Statistical Consulting II which is offered parallel to other courses during the semester. During the later part of the semester the thesis work starts, running parallel to the courses.

During the first half of semester 4, the students opt to take either Financial and Macro Economic Time Series Models or Register Statistics and Production of Official Statistics. Alternatively, any course from the university's selection of courses within second-cycle statistics can be taken. These courses are part-time courses and run parallel to the thesis work, which during the later part of the semester turns into a full-time course.

Students who wish to complete their studies after one year with a Master's degree (60 credits) take Econometrics I, Statistical Consulting III and the Master's Thesis (15 credits) as well as either Bayesian Statistics or Model Assisted Survey Sampling I during semester 2.

Students who wish to complete their studies with a Master's degree (120 credits) are offered the opportunity to write two theses of 15 credits each, thus meeting the independent project qualification requirement of 30 credits. If so, the student will write a thesis for the one-year master's degree in the first year of the programme and write a thesis of 15 credits for the two-year master's degree in the second year. These students shall during semesters 3 and 4 take a further two courses of 15 credits in total within the programme compared to students who opt to write a singular thesis of 30 credits for the two-year master's degree. These students select their courses from among the following courses which have not previously been available to them: Econometrics II, Advanced Regression and Time Series, Bayesian Statistics, Model Assisted Survey Sampling I, Statistical Consulting I, Financial and Macro Economic Time Series Models and Register Statistics and Production of Official Statistics.
