Location of Liverpool Hope University

Liverpool Hope University’s MSc Environmental Management promotes academic development that is directly applicable to professional practice in environmental management, working towards a sustainable, healthy future for the planet and its people. The programme
provides a unique blend of scientific and applied social science approaches necessary for the environmental managers of the future.

This enables you to become familiar with differing perspectives adopted in the management of both urban and rural environments and environmental resources, and prepares you for today’s society where a holistic, multidisciplinary approach is required for a sustainable future. Specialist electives are offered in the areas of nature conservation, urban change and sustainable coastal management.

You will join a dynamic mix of academics, practitioners and students from across the globe. Building on staff and student experience of professional practice, the MSc aims to challenge academic theory by focusing on real situations. Fieldwork is an important feature, including
local fieldwork, for example in Merseyside’s coastal dune region or in local urban centres. In addition you may have the opportunity to take part in departmental residential fieldwork in the French Alps, Berlin, Malta, Netherlands or Romania. Fieldwork develops valuable investigative and research skills, and is also an enjoyable social experience.

The MSc Environmental Management will equip you with the skills and knowledge to respond to this need, for example through employment in the public sector or in environmental consultancy. In addition, you will also develop postgraduate qualities such as innovative thinking and practice, responsibility for continuing personal and professional development, initiative, awareness of ethical dimensions in research, and decision making in environmental management.

Future Career Opportunities

The MSc Environmental Management course offers opportunities for those wishing to pursue a career in the environmental sector, for example in nature conservation management, coastal management, environmental assessment or environmental consultancy. It also provides opportunities for continuing professional development for those already working in related occupations.

Contents

The structure of the course is flexible and includes taught sessions through lectures, seminars, and tutorials, and fieldwork sessions. Elective modules, including opportunities for work-based learning and investigating current issues in environmental management, will allow you to build
a package that is relevant to your needs, interests and future career aspirations.

The MSc is assessed wholly through coursework, with no unseen examinations, and you will have the opportunity to tailor your research project to the research interests of the teaching staff.

The programme consists of 4 taught modules (2 compulsory, 2 elective) and a dissertation (final research project). You will need to complete a total of 120 credits from the taught phase and 60 credits from the research phase to give you a total of 180 credits for the award of MSc
Environmental Management.

Modules

The following modules are part of the taught phase and all worth 30 credits:

  • Principles of Environmental Management (compulsory - 30 credits): You will discuss and critically review the principles of environmental management, including sustainability, and examine key decision-making tools in environmental management including environmental assessment, audit, and management systems. Local case studies will demonstrate the application of principles in practice.
  • Research Skills for Environmental Management (compulsory - 30 credits): This module will enable you to develop the skills required to plan, undertake and communicate Masters level research. The transferable skills covered include, for example: experimental design and analysis, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), academic writing, oral presentation skills and project management.
  • Nature Conservation Management (elective - 30 credits): This module will develop your skills in site survey (including species identification), evaluation and management planning for geo- and nature conservation. You will be required to present results of your own survey, site assessment and management proposals for a specified site. Fieldwork is normally residential and international.
  • Coastal Management: Sustainability into Practice (elective - 30 credits): Fieldwork (possibly residential and international), review and discussion address the complexity of the coastal zone, providing a case study of sustainability in practice. From large-scale and long-term perspectives, techniques available to coastal managers working in diverse-stakeholder and multiple value environments will be explored.
  • Current Issues in Environmental Management (elective - 30 credits)*: Through tutorial assistance, you are required to develop an agreed learning contract with respect to a current topic/issue in environmental management suitable for Masters level study, including appropriate aims, learning outcomes, learning methods, assessment details and marking criteria.
  • Work-related Learning (elective - 30 credits)*: For this module you will be required to secure a work placement of significant length suitable for environmental management at Masters level, allowing substantial work experience and career skills development. A work-related learning contract is negotiated to suit the needs of the programme, the employer and the student.
  • Dissertation / Research Project (compulsory - 60 credits): The research project involves the design, execution and evaluation of an approved research topic and the presentation of the research in the form of a dissertation, professional report or international journal article (for studies of publishable quality).

Note:

Fieldwork is an integral part of the MSc and there are some additional costs associated with these trips (not included in the fees). The fieldwork can be both local day trips and longer residential fieldwork depending on modules. As a guide, non-residential costs are of the order £10-15 per field visit (max.), with international residential costs of approx. £250 for 4-5 days.

* These modules are only available for study with prior approval from the Course Co-ordinator

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
