Contents

The fundamental aim of this programme is to facilitate student achievement through excellence in teaching, a well-designed curriculum and the enthusiasm of staff for their academic subject. Students will study a combination of 15 and 30 credit modules that address health, exercise and nutrition in all age groups.

Assessment is varied, with students being challenged by a range of assessment patterns appropriate to the curriculum content and the learning outcomes of the modules.

Modules

  • Older People’s Health in the 21st Century (15 credits): Global demographic changes have witnessed falling birth rates and rising life expectancies, resulting in an ageing population. In this module students will look specifically at the determinants of active ageing and life course interventions that aim to secure the health needs of this group.
  • Young People’s Health in the 21st Century (15 credits): This module aims to provide students with an inter-disciplinary perspective on young people’s health in a global setting in the 21st Century. Students will consider the mechanisms responsible for developmental changes in both the healthy and diseased youth arising from social, political, cultural and individual lifestyle factors.
  • Applied Research In Health, Exercise And Nutrition (30 credits): This module aims to provide an opportunity for students to gain research and specialist skills relevant to health, exercise and nutrition. It will also allow students to develop an in-depth knowledge and advanced understanding of the research process as particularly applied to undertaking a research project in this area.
  • Metabolism, Chronic Disease and Weight Control (15 credits): This module encompasses a review of metabolism and its role in health and disease. It will investigate changes in metabolism throughout the life course and will consider the role of factors, including physical inactivity and dietary insufficiency, in the development of chronic disease states.
  • Contemporary Issues in Health, Exercise and Nutrition (30 credits): Current issues will dictate the content of this module as they arise. It is envisaged that newly proposed life course public health interventions, particularly those relating to nutrient intake, physical activity and individual behaviour will form key themes within the module.
  • Evidence based Health Promotion (15 credits): This module will explore the growing drive toward the development of an evidence-based culture within the health sector and the variety of methods through which ‘evidence’ can be collated in order to influence practice and policy.
  • Research Project (60 credits): This module aims to allow students to undertake a research project that enables the development of systematic knowledge and understanding, and a critical awareness of current problems and/or new insights of a specialist topic in health, exercise and/or nutrition at Masters level and depth.
