The MA in Therapeutic Child Care will provide a sound theoretical and practical basis for professionals who work with children who have suffered some form of trauma. It offers you the opportunity to extend your skills into the application of recovery and therapeutic intervention. The programme encourages the effective use of reflective practice, experiential group work, international experience and interaction with a broad community of advanced child care practitioners.
The course will equip you with the advanced knowledge and self-awareness to be effective as an advanced child care worker who can work confidently, autonomously, sensitively and appropriately with a wide range of children. It will also provide the essential skills, theory and critical analysis necessary for therapeutic work. Teaching methods The MA in Therapeutic Child Care will be delivered in partnership with the Mary Walsh Institute, SACCS (Sexual Abuse Child Consultancy Service) and Liverpool Hope University. The subject material will include presentations from experienced professionals and leading academics.
The aims of the course also include the creation and involvement of an online global community, as we work towards international delivery of the programme. Research environment You will be supported by a strong team of active researchers including Professor Neil Thompson. In addition, the teaching team will be augmented by visiting lecturers who are eminent in their field. You will enhance your knowledge and critical understanding of selected theories, key issues, concepts and current debates within advanced child care practice. In addition you will develop skills in literature searches and critical thought to facilitate advanced scholarship in the discipline.
As well as being taught by people at the cutting edge of therapeutic child care, you will have the opportunity to undertake international observations. These observations will support an area of child care that you choose to study - for example, the trauma of war on the developing child, or the impact of trauma on children displaced through violence. With the support of teaching staff you will work towards the production of a professional report which will be presented to an invited audience of professionals.
