Location of Newcastle University

This programme provides research training and interdisciplinary insights into the study of applied linguistics, according to the Economic and Social Research Council´s (ESRC) postgraduate training guidelines. It prepares candidates for further research leading to doctoral degrees. It is approved by the ESRC for the award of studentships to UK and EU candidates

Assessment is by course work associated with each of the taught modular courses, including short class tests and submitted work. The research project comprises a portfolio of critical reviews of literature, case reports, pilot experiments or draft conference/journal articles or a dissertation.


Contents

You take modules to a total value of 180 credits. These include: 60 credits of generic social science research training; 60 credits of discipline-specific training (including bilingualism and bilingual education, language and cross-cultural communication, discourse analysis, TESOL, language acquisition, computer assisted language learning, conversation analysis); and a 60-credit research project.

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

You should hold a minimum of an upper-second-class Honours degree in linguistics or a language-related subject. Work experience in a language-related profession is desirable, although not essential. Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.5 with at least 6.0 in writing, TOEFL 90 (Internet-based) or 577 (paper-based), or equivalent.
