The programme is structured so that you can complete modules and progress through the awards. If you complete 60, 120 or 180 credits within the agreed timescale you will graduate with a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Certificate (e-learning), Postgraduate Diploma or MClinRes, respectively.

For the Certificate, you study three compulsory modules: research and governance ethics; study design and data interpretation; and writing for research. For the Diploma, in addition to these three modules, you also study: developing your career in clinical research; designing a research proposal; and clinical trials. For the MClinRes, in addition to the modules outlined above for the Diploma, you also write a dissertation.

You are expected to attend a number of teaching days on Newcastle University's campus during the academic year, unless you are doing the PGCert (e-learning). These dates can be found on the Clinical Research course pages. In addition, learning is supported by self directed study and you are allocated a tutor who guides you through the programme.

An e-learning pathway of study is also available.
