This programme, which meets the General Dental Council´s requirements for professions complementary to dentistry, aims to produce caring, knowledgeable, competent and skilful dental hygienists/therapists.
Dental hygienists/therapists are concerned with the maintenance of dental health and the prevention and treatment of dental disease. The knowledge, skills and aptitudes covered by this course include: the scientific basis of dentistry; behavioural science and communication; the processes of disease; principles of health promotion and disease prevention; the organisation and provision of health care in the community and in hospital; the care of oral appliances and devices; dental practice issues (including ethics, medico-legal considerations, health and safety).
In the clinical skills laboratory, students perform a range of clinical procedures for preventing and treating oral and dental disease. They work with members of the dental team and other health professionals and treat patients at Newcastle Dental Hospital and other hospitals and clinics in the district.
We have one of the largest integrated teaching and hospital complexes in the UK. We provide well-equipped laboratories for dental materials science, microbiology, molecular and cell biology and our research projects are based in laboratory, clinical or social science areas.
Our postgraduate students are engaged in a range of taught programmes and research degrees. We consider applications for research degrees from graduates in dentistry, medicine, pharmacy, biological and biomedical sciences, materials sciences and social sciences.
The quality of our research is recognised by the University and external organisations. Seven of our current staff are holders of Distinguished Scientist Awards from the International Association for Dental Research, our findings are regularly incorporated into national and international guidelines and we routinely publish in high-quality international journals.
Research Assessment Exercise (RAE): you can find out more about the University's areas of research excellence that have been submitted for RAE 2008 and also check how well we performed.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
