We offer a mix of clinical- and laboratory-based MPhil projects within each of our three research themes; molecular and cellular basis for oral diseases; oral health services research; and biomaterials and biological interfaces. Each theme has established links within the Faculty’s and the University’s Research Institute structure to maximise the scientific and methodological basis of research programmes. The School of Dental Sciences maintain strong links with the Institutes of Ageing and Health, Cellular Medicine, Cell and Molecular Biosciences, Health and Society, Research on the Environment and Sustainability, and with the Northern Institute for Cancer Research.
Our current research programmes include: oral health services research and health economics; oral health and nutritional challenges in the elderly; pathobiology of periodontal disease; genetics of tooth development; oral inflammatory disease and diabetes; cellular mechanisms within gut and bacteria; and biomaterials surface science. MPhil and PhD supervision is normally available in these areas.
Our Medical Sciences Graduate School has a thriving postgraduate research culture, with additional support for international students. We have an excellent record for timely PhD submission, provide training in professional/key skills and research techniques, and support personal development.
