Location of Newcastle University

The MLitt incorporates a formal research training component where you will develop your research skills and methodologies (20 credits). You also complete a number of detailed research assignments chosen according to your interests and experience (80 credits), and undertake a dissertation of 16,000–24,000 words consisting of a sustained piece of original research (80 credits). Study consists mainly of seminars, tutorials and independent learning supported by research training.

Dissertation supervision is available in the following areas: classical, medieval and early modern medicine; death and burial; early medieval Britain and Europe; gender, women’s history and the history of sexuality; historical demography; history of ideas; history of psychiatry; national identity, inter-ethnic relations and border issues; politics, international relations and the impact of war; urban history and urban culture.

You may also attend seminars from postgraduate taught modules (without assessment), in agreement with your supervisor and the relevant module leaders.


IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Requirements

Normally, an upper-second-class (2.1) Honours degree or higher, or an international equivalent. For PhD work, a good higher degree in history or a related discipline. Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 7.0, TOEFL 100 (Internet-based) or 600 (paper-based), or equivalent.
