Location of Newcastle University

The School of Mechanical and Systems Engineering can trace its origins back to 1871 when engineering was first taught at the then Armstrong College. Today, we have a lively, inter-disciplinary postgraduate community with graduates from mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, engineering mathematics, physics, chemistry, chemical engineering and mathematics.

Our main research areas are: bioengineering/sensors/MEMS; solid mechanics/composites/railway research/advanced manufacturing; and fluid dynamics/mathematical modelling/thermal systems.

Careers: excellent and rewarding careers in manufacturing industry, energy companies, universities (UK and overseas) and industrial research; opportunities also exist in related academic disciplines.

The School offers the following modes of study for its research degrees: full-time supervised research projects; industry-based research; and part-time study.

Research in the School falls into the three main fields below. For further details on our current activities please click on the links to specific research areas.

Bioengineering, Sensors and MEMS

* Nanotechnology, MEMS and smart materials

* Mechatronics, robotics and sensors

* Bioengineering, rehabilitation and assistive technology

Design, Manufacture and Materials

* Gears and mechanical power transmissions

* Railway technology and operations

* Composites and mechanics of solids

* Engineering design

* Manufacturing systems and quality

Multiphase Flow and Thermal Systems
