Students are expected to carry out supervised research at the leading edge of their chosen subject. Most students are registered in the first instance for the degree of MPhil. The transfer from MPhil to PhD is subject to students passing an assessment process which normally involves submission of written work and an oral examination.
The final stage of the PhD degree is the oral or viva voce examination, in which students are required to defend the thesis to a Board of Examiners.

Requirements
First or good second class honours degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate subject. The minimum non-graduate qualifications acceptable for admission to Masters Degree are:
* Membership of recognised professional institutions of at least graduate status or a relevant professional qualification acceptable to the Board of Studies.
* Part II Graduateship by examination of the Institute of Physics and the Physical Society, or the achievement of a similar standard in the corresponding examination of another recognised professional institution.
* Extended and responsible experience at an appropriate standard in a relevant field acceptable to the Board of Studies.
English requirements
IELTS 6.5 (with not less than 6.0 in each of the four components).
TOEFL 580 (paper based test) or 237 (computer-based test) (TWE: 4) or 92 (internet-based test) with not less than 21 in each of the components.
