The PGCE covers the 5–11 age range. We have a number of places for primary French specialists.
The programme consists of school experience, primary professional studies and curriculum studies. Almost half your time (18 weeks) will be spent in schools to build your confidence and competence as a classroom practitioner. The focus on professional studies and curriculum studies will prepare you to deliver the National Curriculum in school. You will cover: art; design and technology; English; geography; history; information and communication technology; mathematics; music; physical education; religious education; and science.
In order to be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), you must demonstrate compliance with all the specified standards, including successful completion of the Training and Development Agency for Schools’ (TDA) tests in numeracy, literacy and ICT. You undertake 60 credits of Master’s-level modules throughout your training year. If you successfully pass all components, you graduate with the PGCE at Master’s level and are recommended for QTS.
Students who pass the PGCE with QTS have the option to continue their studies on a part-time basis on the MEd Practitioner Enquiry. The MEd focuses on teaching and learning in school settings and draws on the experience you acquire through your day-to-day teaching. Students choosing this option benefit from fast-track entry, which enables them to complete the MEd Practitioner Enquiry in two years.
We offer the following Primary PGCE programme and more information can be found on the GTTR website:
Primary (X100)
Please note that if you are interested in undertaking Primary French, you should apply for the general Primary course code (X100), and indicate that you are interested in the French module.
Compulsory modules:
EDU8131 Professional Learning in Context (Primary)
EDU8001 Thinking Through Teaching: The Reflective Practitioner
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testOther than in exceptional circumstances, you should hold a second-class (2.2) Honours degree or above. You also require GCSE or O level passes (Grades A-C) in English language, mathematics and a science subject before commencement of the PGCE course. It is important that you have spent a minimum of two weeks in a UK primary school in order to inform your application and any subsequent performance in the selection process.
Please note that under TDA regulations, the University is unable to offer places on its PGCE programmes without a selection process that includes personal interviews. The selection day consists of a presentation by each applicant, a written task, a mathematics task and an individual interview. Applicants are expected to have some experience of the English school system, usually through school observation visits. Successful applicants will be required to have an Enhanced Criminal Records check and undergo medical assessment to confirm 'fitness to teach' prior to entry onto the programme.
