Location of Newcastle University

During this intensive PGCE programme, two thirds of your time is based in schools. Training focuses on the development of the knowledge, skills and understanding expected of newly qualified teachers.

Subject work undertaken in partnership schools is underpinned and extended by a linked programme of curriculum studies in the University.

A process of reflective enquiry underpins the development of teaching skills, as well as forming the basis for the written work submitted.

In order to be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) you must demonstrate compliance with all the specified standards, including successful completion of the Training and Development Agency for Schools’ (TDA) tests in numeracy, literacy and ICT. You undertake 60 credits of Master’s-level modules throughout your training year. If you successfully pass all components, you graduate with the PGCE at Master’s level and are recommended for QTS.

Students who pass the PGCE with QTS have the option to continue their studies on a part-time basis on the MEd Practitioner Enquiry. Students choosing this option benefit from fast-track entry, which enables them to complete the MEd Practitioner Enquiry in two years.
