We have expertise in social policy, political science, gender studies, criminology, anthropology, women’s studies, and medical sociology.
MPhil and PhD projects cover a wide spectrum of contemporary sociology including: bodies, identities and experiences; culture and material life; ‘development’ and the global south; emotions and intimacy; environment and society; imagining pasts and futures; sexualities and gender; sociology of ethics; sociologies of health and life sciences; sociology of law; and visual and aesthetic cultures. Each of these themes represents the research expertise of members of staff in sociology at Newcastle, all of whom are research active.

Contents
The process of researching and writing a doctoral thesis involves investigating a specific aspect of social life or social theory in considerable depth. We supervise doctoral students across the range of interests indicated in the above research areas.
We participate fully in an inter-faculty training programme for research students. This covers the exploration of epistemological issues, quantitative and qualitative research methods, the organisation of PhD research, and library, information and writing skills.
IELTS
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Normally an upper-second-class (2.1) Honours degree and/or a Master´s degree, or an international equivalent in the following (or related) discipline areas: sociology; social policy; criminology; organisational studies; cultural studies; media studies; film studies; human geography; politics; gender studies; and health studies.
Applicants whose first language is not English are normally required to hold IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 90 (Internet-based), 577 (paper-based) or 233 (computer-based), or equivalent.
