The programme aims to provide state-of-the-art research and teaching methodology in adapted physical activity and the social, pedagogical, and technical aspects of physical activity adapted to the needs of persons with a disability. This Erasmus Mundus programme combines the expertise of a number of universities throughout the EU and the world, and offers students comprehensive training and expert knowledge in the many aspects of adapted physical activity.
Each year, visiting scholars from European and non-European Universities are invited to conduct teaching and research assignments. The programme promotes the exchange of ideas between professionals and future practitioners from around the world. The multicultural aspects of the Master’s programme are a great asset to the programme itself and to the field of Adapted Physical Activity (APA) in general.

The objective of the Erasmus Mundus Master in Adapted Physical Activity program is to combine the competencies of a number of European and non -European universities in order to offer the students a comprehensive training and adequate knowledge in the many aspects of Adapted Physical Activity ( APA ).
1. To educate competent and critical professionals, who are able to design and evaluate adapted physical activity programs using an evidence-based approach. The course will provide the competencies to work in 3 professional areas: education (special needs schools), rehabilitation (late stage), and sports settings (competitive and recreational). It caters for working with individuals with a variety of disabilities both physical and mental across the life-span.
2. To educate people to participate in research to advance the field of APA . The course offers basic scientific skills which will enable graduates to pursue an academic career or undertake further research or doctoral study.
3. To educate people in identifying APA needs in different countries and seek out multicultural collaboration to enhance the opportunities for people with a disability.
Career prospects
Students specialised in adapted physical activity at the Master’s level often work with physically challenged persons in careers such as education, coaching, personal training, physical therapy, occupational therapy, medicine or other health care professions. Some seek a research career by acquiring knowledge and expertise in both adapted physical activity and another discipline within kinesiology, and pursue a doctoral degree.
This is a co-operative programme organised by four European universities (the EMMAPA Consortium):
The programme involves study periods in at least two of the four universities, but also links to a significant number of other European Universities. The EMMAPA Consortium has 3 non-European partners: the Uni versity of Queensland, the University of Stellenbosch, and the University of Virginia.
