Belgium has developed almost all kinds of nuclear activities on its territory: power plants, nuclear fuel production, radioelement production, engineering companies, accelerator design and fabrication, waste management, safety management, nuclear medicine, research and... higher education. The Belgian Nuclear higher Education Network (BNEN) combines the expertise in nuclear education and research of six major Belgian universities (K.U.Leuven, UGENT, VUB, UCL, ULG and ULB) and the Belgian nuclear research centre SCKoCEN.
The aim of the programme is to deliver experts in the field of nuclear energy generation, the construction of facilities for appropriate use and the follow-up of safety procedures concerning nuclear processes.
Graduates of the Master of Nuclear Engineering by BNEN possess the necessary skills and knowledge to carry out duties on a high level of responsibility in nuclear power plants, nuclear research reactors, nuclear regulatory organisations, nuclear engineering firms, nuclear fuel fabrication, nuclear waste treatment, radio-isotope production, etc. In addition, the diploma Master of Nuclear Engineering is an important part of the legal qualifications necessary to become a safety responsible in a major nuclear installation.
The complete programme consists of compulsory main course modules, elective advanced courses, an internship and a master thesis. The nuclear engineering programme can be followed as a one-year programme or can be spread over two or more academic years. The individual courses are presented in ‘short fat’ modular format, allowing access to the programme for part-time students with a professional occupation. Any module may be taken as a short course for continuing professional development purposes.
The time schedule of the programme stimulates student mobility in the preparation of the master thesis , e.g. in combination with an internship in industry, a nuclear research centre or a university, within Belgium or Europe. The lectures are taught at the premises of the Belgian nuclear research centre SCK·CEN. The laboratory exercises make use of the nuclear facilities of SCK·CEN. Various technical visits are organised to research and industrial nuclear facilities.
The Master of Nuclear Engineering is an internationally oriented, interuniversity programme organised by the BNEN in close collaboration with nuclear research and industry. The aim of the BNEN programme is to provide students with all the skills and scientific and technical background necesarry to carry out duties at a high level of responsibility in safe and economical operation of nuclear power plants; regulation and control of nuclear installations or design of new nuclear systems.
Students entering the BNEN programme have a solid background in engineering, mathematics and physics. They possess a problem solving attitude and a genuine safety spirit.
Upon completion of the master in nuclear engineering, students will have acquired a thorough understanding of nuclear physical processes, a comprehensive knowledge of the procedures and techniques necessary to control nuclear processes, an in-depth knowledge of nuclear safety, reliability procedures and nuclear waste treatment, the competence to design and maintain structures to control nuclear processes, communicative skills in the field of nuclear technology and the capability to participate in research concerning the above mentioned topics.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take test* This programme is a Master-after-Master open for students holding a 5 year Master degree in Engineering from a Belgian university.
* Applications from candidates holding a different Master degree from the Flemish or the French community will be evaluated by the Teaching Committee based on the academic background of the candidate.
* Candidates holding a foreign degree of higher education can be admitted after evaluation and approval by the Teaching Committee and with observance of the procedural rules of the respective partner universities.
TOEFL Test Scores
* 550 points on the written test is required or equivalent.
New Score Scales:
Because of significant changes to the content of the test, there will be new scoring scales. Score reports will contain five scores: four section scores (reading, listening, writing and speaking) and a total score. Each section score will be on a 0-30 scale; the total score is the sum of the four section scores.
Application process
STEP 1: Acceptance by the BNEN Teaching Committee
An application file consists of, at least:
* the registration form;
* a motivated application letter;
* a curriculum vitae;
* transcripts of academic results;
* when applying for a grant, a declaration of the non-employment situation (limited number of grants)
STEP 2: Registration in one of the six partner universities
After approval by the Teaching Committee students need to register at one of the six universities.
STEP 3: Access to the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre
All candidates will be screened by the Belgian Federal Agency for Nuclear Control for clearance and access to the nuclear infrastructure of SCK•CEN. Admission to the programme will depend on clearance and access being granted.
