Location of The University of Edinburgh

As a major financial centre, Edinburgh is an excellent place to study Operational Research with a financial theme. Recent changes in legislation on risk exposure mean that there is significant demand from financial institutions for the range of skills possessed by graduates with an MSc in Operational Research with Finance.

Learning Outcomes Graduates will be able to identify appropriate Operational Research techniques to apply to practical problems, and select the mathematical techniques and software required to compute a solution.

Specifically, students will acquire the core skills of Java programming, the XPress linear optimization modelling language Mosel, the Simul8 simulation package as well as developing high-level applications of Excel.

Depending on your choice of optional courses, you will develop more specialist skills in computing, optimization and statistics, as well as an insight into a range of industrial and financial applications of Operational Research.


Contents

The MSc consists of traditional lecture-based courses and practical lab-based courses, assessed by exams, written reports and programming assignments. An industrial or academic project is written up as a dissertation.

Requirements

A good first degree (UK 2:1 or its equivalent if outside the UK) in a numerate discipline, for example mathematics, engineering, computer science, physical or biological sciences, economics or business.

One postgraduate scholarship of £1,500 per annum is available each year to supplement a more substantial award for an outstanding postgraduate student in Operational Research.

TOEFL 237 in CBT (with 21 in each section)
