This is a new course that responds to the needs of the holders of accredited BEng degrees to receive further learning through MSc courses in order to satisfy the educational requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer. Many of the modules are delivered in a form suitable for study in the workplace. Pathways through the course at present are in civil engineering.

Teaching and Assessment

Teaching

The course is taught by staff from the School of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, with some contribution from Industrial experts. Teaching is mainly in the form of lectures, but IT sessions and seminars are also used where appropriate. Modules are shared between two ten-week teaching terms running October-December and January-March. MSc Professional Engineering is only available as a part-time programme and can be completed following either two or three years of study. For two year completion, part-time students attend lectures for up to two days each week. Alternatively, three year completion can be achieved by attending a single day each week. Furthermore, students have the option of undertaking design oriented modules in their workplace, completing the set work without the need to attend all lectures. Although work for the MSc dissertation commences during the second term of the final year, most of the research work is carried out during the summer months.

Assessment

Assessment of theoretical modules is based on a combination of examinations and coursework. Examinations are shared between the January and April/May examination periods. Design oriented modules are normally assessed by coursework only, where students work on challenging projects that are varied each year. For such modules taken in the workplace, an interview is included as part of the assessment. For the MSc dissertation, students are required to attend a viva following submission of the final report.

Career Prospects

The course is designed for graduates already in relevant employment, incorporating an element of workplace learning and aiding development of career opportunities within the context of their own employment.

This degree is accredited as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired a Accredited CEng (Partial) BEng(Hons) or an Accredited IEng (Full) BEng/BSc (Hons) undergraduate first degree. See for further information.
