The MSc Telecommunications and Networks syllabus covers recent major technological developments in telecommunications; technology; protocols; security and networks including: digital, mobile and wireless communications, photonics and optical communications, internet and web service security and coding.
Teaching and Assessment
The programme consists of 9 compulsory taught modules, plus a dissertation. Four modules are taught in the first term Mondays and Fridays (10 weeks) and five modules are taught in the second term Mondays and Fridays (10 weeks). Exams take place at the end of first and second term and the dissertation work is completed during the summer term. The course format allows Full Time and Part Time study. Much support is given to students, part time and full time, with their preparation for the modules and in their project work.
Full-time students complete the programme in 12 months and are expected to devote a significant part of their non-taught hours to laboratory work, project work as well as private study.
The course format makes the programme attractive to those who wish to study part time while retaining full-time jobs. The Part Time students may attend only one day in a week mostly on Mondays or Fridays, with some laboratories in block weeks. The duration of a part-time programme is two years (this may be extended to three years in order to cater for individual circumstances).
Aims of the Programme
The overall aims of the programme are the advanced education of engineers and applied scientists intending to develop a rich knowledge of modern electronic communication systems, from devices, to systems, networks, protocols and their security and the development of expertise which will enable to handle problems in modern digital era.
Teaching and Learning Strategy
The teaching and learning strategy is based on lectures, supported wherever appropriate by coursework. Assessment for the taught elements of the programme is based on coursework and written examinations.

Participants will gain knowledge of the fundamentals including communication devices, underlying principles, system analysis, protocols, network optimization, encryption and security and an exposure to challenging problems of emerging complex systems engineering applications.

Course Content
The course draws on the knowledge and experiences of leading experts and active researchers working in Telecommunications and Networks. The expertise of the teaching team includes photonics, optical sensors, wireless communications, network security, and cryptography. The Telecommunications program is supported by research in photonic devices, fibre optic sensors, optical communications, wireless networks, digital signal processing, cryptography, network communications, and information security. The students are expected to work closely with the research teams to widen their knowledge and understanding of the state-of-the-art technologies in telecommunications and networks. This will provide a good foundation for students who chose to pursue a PhD after their MSc degrees.

Completion of 8 modules and examinations will lead to the award of a Diploma. The completion of all the modules, examinations and a dissertation will lead to the award of a Masters degree.
The individual dissertation is developed in close collaboration with various research groups within the Instrumentation and Sensors Research Centre, as well as other groups in the School at the forefront of their technological field.
