The course aims to develop:

* skills in developing software using modern programming languages and methods
* skills in designing and creating e-business software systems to solve realistic problems
* skills in evaluating and using different standards, platforms and architectures for building interoperable e-business systems

Overview

This course focuses on producing high quality software development professionals who have the wider business knowledge necessary for e-business enabled enterprises.

The course is professionally focused and provides the knowledge and skills necessary for embarking on a career as technically competent software developers, such as programming, databases, design and specification as well as relevant business topics such as ERP and e-commerce.

In addition to its strong practical orientation, the course also provides the knowledge of research principles, methods and techniques necessary for undertaking research in the field of software engineering or e-commerce.

It equips you for positions in software houses and enterprises, where there is a significant demand for IT professionals with a good knowledge of software development and its e-business context. The course is also excellent preparation for doctoral (PhD) study.

In addition to its strong practical orientation, the course also provides knowledge of research principles, methods and techniques necessary for undertaking research in the field of software engineering or e-commerce.

Course Structure

Business Enginering with ERP Solutions

* Explain the fundamental principles of ERP technology and second generation ERP systems, and evaluate their business and technical benefits in context
* Analyse the critical success factors for ERP system implementation in context
* Use Accelerated SAP (ASAP) methodology in solving complex problems
* Perform complex business process modelling using the EPC notation

Databases

* Identify the key issues relating to the management of relational database systems and object-oriented database systems
* Model the logical structure of database systems using different data models
* Analyse data and document structures using different models
* Create and query relational databases using SQL
* Evaluate the new developments in data and document handling systems and understand their practical applications and implications

Electronic Commerce

* Explain the use of business models in the development and evaluation of an e-commerce application
* Design e-commerce applications supporting user registration, profiling,payments, and secure transactions
* Apply internet technologies such as HTML, Javascript, MySQL and PHP to implement e-commerce activities
* Evaluate problem solutions best suitable for a specific e-commerce application

Interaction Design

* Demonstrate detailed understanding of the importance of usability and the consequences of poor usability for interactive systems
* Identify the theoretical foundations in cognitive psychology for human-computer interaction
* Critically evaluate a user-centred design process for interactive systems, including analysis, design and evaluation activities
* Interpret HCI principles and guidelines, applying them to a variety of situations

Programming in Java

* Demonstrate a systematic understanding of Java and its implementation of the key ideas of object and class
* Critically evaluate the use of encapsulation in software development
* Construct working programs in Java
* Define new classes, applying object oriented design and program structuring techniques

Research, Methods and Professional Issues

* Research activity in terms of the effectiveness of its approach and implementation
* Understand and apply a range of research methodologies such as inductive and deductive reasoning, explanation and prediction in the evaluation of published research
* Recognise and use a range of secondary data sources when performing a research task
* Communicate effectively with individuals and groups using a range of media
* Evaluate the legal, ethical and professional dimensions of typical information professions and information industry practices

Software Systems Design

* Demonstrate a systematic understanding of software system design and its connections with requirements engineering, system analysis, system implementation and system verification
* Use UML as a software system design language
* Demonstrate a systematic understanding of software architectural styles and use them to create or transform software architecture models
* Use design patterns,object frameworks and formal specifications techniques in developing detailed system design model with provable properties

Systems Specification

* Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the changing nature of software intensive systems and the range of new methods, tools and techniques available to develop these systems
* Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the challenges of requirements elicitation
* Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the fundamentals of software quality assurance techniques
* Apply the principles and concepts involved in object-oriented analysis and design and build object-oriented analysis and design models using the constructs of the Unified Modelling Language (UML)

Requirements

Each application is considered on its merits and is given full consideration by admissions staff.

The usual minimum entrance requirement is a good second class honours degree from a UK university, a recognised equivalent from an accredited overseas institution or an equivalent professional qualification.

Applicants should have basic competence and familiarity with mathematics.

Applicants should have good professional English. For students whose first language is not English, an IELTS score of 6.5 or TOEFL score of 100 (internet-based) 600 (paper-based) or 250 (computer-based version) is required.

Previous academic and commercial experience will also be considered.
