The substantive focus of the MA program in International Relations: Global Governance and Social Theory is the analysis of governance beyond the nation state. This research topic is examined from a political science perspective, and within the context of enduring processes of globalization and increasing cross-border activity. This emphasis on the governance perspective and the explicit integration of general social theoretical questions in the context of social and political change is a unique feature of the M.A. in International Relations. Students will participate in a small, relatively specialized, and academically rigorous, all English degree program.
The program is offered jointly by International University Bremen (IUB, Jacobs University Bremen as of Spring 2007) and the University of Bremen. Both universities have particularly strong positions in the field of international relations, and political science. A major research centre on Transformations of the State (TranState) which focusses on the interface between international and domestic politics, has been granted by the German National Science Foundation. The study is thus linked to an attractive research environment. Continuation on the PhD track in Bremen is possible after completion of the MA program.
The core of the program of studies is composed of four main fields:
* Theories and Issues of Global Governance
This field focuses on basic theories and themes of international relations and governance.
* Changing Context of Global Governance
The theoretical focus of the program is supplemented by in-depth knowledge on specific policy fields and cross-sectional issues in international governance.
* Theorizing Social Order and Change
Covering classical as well as contemporary social theory, as well as social theory of globalization, this component aims to provide a broader, social-theoretical framework for dealing with issues of governance.
* Methodology
In order to provide students with the techniques to conduct up-do-date research, the program offers courses on advanced qualitative and quantitative research methods as well as on research design and the logic of scientific research.
During the course of study students will take three courses from each field, amounting to a total of 12 courses for the M.A. program. Each course is worth 7.5 ECTS credit points, the MA thesis is worth 30 ECTS credit points. The annual maximum credits to be collected are 60 ECTS points. Upon completion of the M.A. program students may choose to continue on the PhD track in Bremen.
