Location of City University London

This course provides you with a broad analysis of contemporary international politics and the impact of human rights on the international stage. By developing a coherent and balanced mixture of theoretical approaches with a study of cases and global issues, the course enables you to view world events from an informative and knowledgeable position.

Teaching and Assessment

Teaching

We will teach you through a combination of lectures, classes and seminars, taking place in the first and second academic periods (September-April).

Assessment

The majority of postgraduate sociology modules are assessed by 100% coursework. However, some modules outside of the department may have different assessment methods so please check carefully. You are required to obtain a minimum pass mark of 50% in all assessment components.

Dissertation

The dissertation of 15,000 words accounts for one-third of the total marks for the MA degree

Career Prospects

82 percent of City's Sociology graduates are in employment or further study within 6 months of completing their course.
Demand for international politics graduates with a focus on human rights is extremely high. Opportunities exist within local and national government, NGOs and multinational companies.

Course Content

This course, along with other human rights courses at City, has expanded rapidly, recruiting a diverse range of students from all corners of the world. Given the location and the interests of staff in the diverse dimensions of globalisation, the course is particularly appropriate for those who are interested in debates about the relationships between civil and political rights and economic, social and cultural rights.

This course offers you a stronger understanding of human rights issues at the global level, rather than the country level.

Course Structure

You complete six taught modules: three compulsory core modules and three electives. You also take part in a dissertation workshop and produce a dissertation over the summer.

* Political Islam in global politics
* Political economy of global finance
* The politics of forced displacement and resettlement

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

The normal requirement is a good honours degree in any subject but applicants are also welcome from those who with substantial experience in the media, information services or the communication sectors.

If your first language is not English you must show evidence that your command of the English Language is suitable for entry to Postgraduate study. You would be expected to have one of the following English Language qualifications:

* A first degree from an overseas institution recognised by the University as providing adequate evidence of proficiency in the English language, for example, from institutions in Australia, Canada or the USA.


* GCE O-level/GCSE English language or English literature, grade C minimum.


* Cambridge ESOL CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English) at grade C or above.


* An overall score of 6.5 in the English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum of 6.0 for each subtest.


* A score of 600 minimum (computer score 250) in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
