This course offers a contemporary overview of the field of media and communications studies.

Taught by leading specialists in these fields it provides you with an advanced grounding in the social and political context of communications sociology, methodological approaches to researching the field, and advanced discussion of current media and communications debates.

Teaching and Assessment

Teaching

We will teach you through a combination of lectures, classes and seminars, taking place in the first and second academic periods (September-April).

Assessment

The majority of postgraduate sociology modules are assessed by 100% coursework. However, some modules outside of the department may have different assessment methods so please check carefully. You are required to obtain a minimum pass mark of 50% in allassessment components.

Dissertation

The dissertation of 15,000 words accounts for one-third of the total marks for the MA degree.

82% of City's 2009 Sociology graduates were in employment or further study within 6 months of completing their course.

Course Content

This course covers the most significant recent developments in media and communications and will enable you to specialise in particular areas of interest, developing your critical skills and advancing your knowledge.

You will learn the ways in which media and communications work, skills in critical social understanding and techniques of social enquiry and communication through varied teaching methods.

The Department of Sociology at City is particularly strong in the range and density of options it can offer students taking this course.

The course is well suited to individuals who wish to extend, deepen, update and sharpen their knowledge and understand current developments in media and communications, and to undertake an extended piece of original research.

Course Structure

You take six taught modules: three compulsory modules and three electives. You also take part in a dissertation workshop and produce a dissertation over the summer.

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

The normal requirement is a good honours degree in any subject but applicants are also welcome from those who with substantial experience in the media, information services or the communication sectors.

If your first language is not English you must show evidence that your command of the English Language is suitable for entry to Postgraduate study. You would be expected to have one of the following English Language qualifications:

* A first degree from an overseas institution recognised by the University as providing adequate evidence of proficiency in the English language, for example, from institutions in Australia, Canada or the USA.


* GCE O-level/GCSE English language or English literature, grade C minimum.


* Cambridge ESOL CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English) at grade C or above.


* An overall score of 6.5 in the English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum of 6.0 for each subtest.


* A score of 600 minimum (computer score 250) in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
