This MSc is taught by the Centre for Ecology and Conservation (CEC), whose evolutionary behaviour research group is amongst the most dynamic in the UK. As an MSc student you will be integrated into this group and conduct cutting-edge research projects that aim to make genuine contributions to the field of evolutionary and behavioural ecology.
The programme has a significant research component combined with taught modules that provide the theoretical background, methodological techniques and practical skills to prepare you for professional research. Taught at Exeter's Cornwall Campus in new buildings with state-of-the-art facilities, there is considerable scope for you to choose topics you wish to pursue.
A special feature of the programme is the African field trip which includes visits to some of Africa’s largest and most important game reserves, as well as an introduction to some of the day-to-day problems faced by conservation biologists in developing nations. Travel and subsistence costs for this part of the programme are included in the programme fee.
The taught component of this programme (three modules) is delivered in the first five months, during which time you will be encouraged to develop an independent research topic. Following the Africa field trip, you will carry out your literature review and present your research proposal. The rest of the academic year is dedicated to your research project.

Please note that availability of all modules is subject to timetabling constraints and that not all modules are available every year.
Assessment
Half the total assessment is based on the long-term research project and associated items (literature review, oral presentation). Taught modules are assessed through formal oral presentation, written reports and discussions during or on the immediate completion of these modules.

Requirements
The programme is available to graduates of any science discipline and a good first degree (minimum 2:1 or equivalent required). Applicants from non-science backgrounds will also be considered, provided that the first degree contained some empirical component, and/or if applicants have had work experience in the field of evolutionary or behavioural ecology.
