Our MEd SEN programme enables you to focus on different areas of special educational needs within a generic programme framework and develops your understanding of the theory and practice of special educational needs within both special and mainstream educational settings. Through the course of the programme, you will gain an appreciation of inclusive education and its allied concepts of integration, segregation and exclusion from both educational and societal perspectives. This masters pathway gives you the opportunity to study another aspect of education by selecting up to 30 credits of optional modules from the two other MEd pathways: Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) or Creative Arts.
If you choose to study more than 30 credits outside of those stipulated for one of the named pathways, you will be awarded a Masters in Education.
The programme offers you the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in schools in the UK through a placement module; this experience is invaluable for a range of future professional roles such as teaching, advisory work and special educational needs coordinators.
In addition to the MEd SEN, we offer a Postgraduate Diploma and Certificate in SEN.
Duration One year full-time in Exeter.
Course & Modules The full-time, one year MEd SEN in Education pathway is part of a coherent Masters programme, which gives you the opportunity to study another aspect of Education.
Students may select any combination of elective modules (timetable permitting) up to the maximum of 60 credits, 30 of which must be obtained through pathway specific modules. In order to receive an award with a specialist programme title (e.g. MEd SEN in Education), a maximum of 30 credits may be taken outside the chosen special field. Students completing the programme with fewer than the minimum of 90 credits in a single specialist programme (Creative Arts/TESOL/SEN/ Technology, Creativity and Thinking) will be eligible for the award of “Master of Education” (with no named specialism).
