There is currently much interest in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques in the industrial and commercial sectors. Theoretical and practical knowledge of AI programming techniques, such as evolutionary computation (genetic algorithms, genetic programming) and neural networks, are now widely sought after by programmers and researchers working in leading-edge organisations.
To reflect this, the MSc in Applied Artificial Intelligence will equip you with the skills and knowledge to stay at the forefront of this rapidly developing area. It is designed to give you the latest knowledge and computational skills in the areas of machine learning and intelligent discovery methods.
The programme also provides the opportunity to learn more about the application of AI techniques to commercial and industrial problems, especially in areas in which we have research expertise such as, Machine Learning, Pattern Recognition, and Knowledge Representation. It is designed both for recent graduates and working professionals, such as software designers, who want to enhance their knowledge with the latest developments in applied artificial intelligence.
The programme opens up a wide range of employment opportunities and can also act as a foundation for PhD research in the application of novel techniques to complex problems.

For a full list and details of the individual modules, please see the MSc Applied Artificial Intelligence programme pages on the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences pages of our website.
Assessment
There are no formal examinations. Instead, each taught module has its own within-module assignments and tests that contribute 66 per cent to the overall degree, with 33 per cent of your marks coming from the research project. Project 8,000 words, plus 4,000 for appendices.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

To be considered for a place on the MSc in Applied Artificial Intelligence students should have obtained (or be expected to obtain) at least a second class honours. Other marks will be considered in the context of equivalence to the British standard of second class honours degree.
Other Expected Capabilities
Cases will be examined on an individual basis to ensure that three key areas have been covered by the student's previous degree:
* Computer skills including programming
* Mathematical skills including statistics
* Analytical skills
We expect students to possess good skills in reading technical material, independently collecting appropriate material from the library, collating this information and making notes. For the research component, students should be motivated and self-disciplined enough to work independently under the guidance of a supervisor. Overall, students need to possess good communication skills to be able to work effectively under the teaching guidance of lecturers and be responsive in participation in team based activities.
If your first language is not English you will be required to provide evidence of competence in the English language and, after admission to the University, you may be given the opportunity to take additional language instruction, normally at the University English Language Centre. IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) are acceptable for evidence.
Language Requirements
Offer not conditional on English language:
IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 in writing section
or TOEFL Computer-Based Test 230 with an Essay Rating of at least 4
or TOEFL iBT 90 with a writing score of at least 17
| Minimal degree required: | Bachelor's degree |
| Minimal amount of work experience | Not specified |
| Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): | Grade A (Score: 80) |
