The Master's programme in Business Studies trains you to analyse complex organisational issues and to produce well thought out solutions to address them.
As a student of the Master's programme in Business Studies you will gain not only a thorough knowledge of specialist business literature, but also the ability to apply it in practice. Business Studies encourages you to take a multidisciplinary approach to organisational issues in context. The programme has a strong international focus and includes both theoretical and more practice-oriented courses. The tracks are designed to introduce you to the theory and to develop your skills successfully by conducting your own research project. The study programme offers five areas of specialisation from which you will choose two tracks before the start of the programme. Within these tracks there are many course options. This gives you the opportunity to choose a specialisation and tailor it exactly to your personal preferences and skills.
The philosophy of our programme is that you will combine a specialisation in business administration with your selection of elective courses. In the first semester the programme will offer a theoretical introduction and the core courses for your specialisation. In the second semester you will write your master thesis and take two elective courses. Difficult to choose? In the first two months you will be enrolled in two tracks during which you can make the final decision for your preferred specialisation.
"Teaming up with other international students helped me consolidate theoretical knowledge, explore different cultures, and develop managerial and language skills." - Kees Kvietkauskas, MSc Business Studies
Please find here the list of elective courses.
The Master's thesis is the final requirement to be completed prior to graduation. Students will write the thesis within the chosen track. It will be supervised by one of the lecturers from the relevant track.
Upon successful completion of the programme, students receive a Master's degree in Business Studies and the title Master of Science (MSc).
Programme structure
The Master of Science in Business Studies is a one-year programme of 60 ECTS credits (1 ECTS credit = 0,5 US credit). The academic year runs from September to the beginning of July and is divided into two semesters, each with three blocks. See the the academic calendar for the exact dates.
First semester (September - January)
During the first block, students will get a theoretical introduction to the two tracks of their chosing. By the end of this first block, students will chose a definitive track. In the second block, students will study the subjects more in-depth and further their specialisation by attending two track-specific core courses in smaller tutorials. In the third block, students will formulate a thesis research question and work on the research methodology. In this block, students will develop academic skills to accomplish research.
Second semester (February - June)
During the second semester, the focus will be on writing a thesis. At the same time, you will be challenged to extend your expertise by following two elective courses, allowing students to customise their programme for a perfect fit.
For students who obtained a Bachelor's degree from a Dutch university (either national or international students): it is possible to start the Marketing and International Management track in February.
Master's students can also choose to do an internship in order to conduct research for their final thesis. This offers the opportunity to conduct research in a company or organization on an academic level. Interested students should contact the Internship Office.
