This programme is the only UK MA with a focus on Gender and Identity in the Middle East. You will explore the various ways gender, individual and national identities are constructed, reproduced and challenged in the Middle East and in the West. The MA in Gender and Identity in the Middle East focuses on the changing social, cultural, economic and political contexts that shape gender roles and identities in the region.
It also addresses issues related to the diversity of Muslim cultures and societies in different geographical, social, cultural and political contexts with a focus both on contemporary and past history. You will develop an appreciation for the changing and diverse roles of gender relationships and identities.
These issues are seldom brought together, despite the fact that the Middle East extends to Muslim dispersion abroad. Moreover, in this age of globalisation, identity formation and identity politics cut across regions in new and dynamic ways. Our MA reflects these contemporary realities and tackles gender and transnationalism in an integrated and analytically coherent way.
Please note that availability of all modules is subject to timetabling constraints and that not all modules are available every year.

The entrance requirements for the MA in Gender and Identity in the Middle East are as follows:
* A good Honours degree in the Humanities and Social Sciences
* Overseas students must meet the University-wide standards for proficiency in the English language and have appropriate tested qualification (eg, IELTS 6.5),
* Given the vast range of specialised subjects included in the broad field of Islamic studies, and the relative rarity of undergraduate training in those subjects, there is no specific prior language requirement for students interested in the MA in Gender and Identity in the Middle East. MA students may take course training in Arabic as module options for their MA in Gender and Identity.
* Mature students are encouraged to apply. The University and the Institute have a strong commitment to the widening participation remit and encourage applications from all sections of society, particularly from ethnic and religious minorities.
