The Master of Science in Economics has a strong international emphasis and offers a wide range of specialisations ranging from theoretical to applied.
Students in the programme can choose between a degree programme in general economics or in a specialised field of economics.

The Master of Science in Economics is a one-year programme. The curriculum yields 60 ECTS credits (1 ECTS credit = ½ US credit). The academic year is divided into two semesters, each with two quarters. Courses run from September through early April (first three quarters), and the final quarter is devoted to the Master's thesis (April to June).
Students can choose between a programme in general economics or in a specialised field of economics.

Master students can also choose to do an internship in order to conduct research for their final thesis. An internship offers the opportunity to conduct research in a company or organization on an academic level. Students can find internships through the Internship Office.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
More informationApplicants are expected to hold a Bachelor`s or Master`s degree in Economics, or to have taken economics as a major subject. Students are expected to have taken a course in econometrics or extended quantitative methods at the undergraduate or graduate level.
All students with a Bachelor of Science degree from the UvA in General Economics (Economics, International Economics, International Financial Economics and Industrial Organisation) will automatically be admitted. Students with a similar degree from another university are eligible to apply for admission.
General entry requirements
In addition to an academic degree in the field of economics, applicants must meet the English language proficiency requirement. Applicants must therefore submit an official report of a recent TOEFL score (600 or higher for the paper-baed test, 250 or higher for the computer-based test, 100 or higher for the Internet-based test). Alternatively, an IELTS score of 6.5 or higher is also acceptable.
Applicants whose native language is English, applicants with a degree from an English-taught university programme and applicants who took English at the Dutch pre-university secondary education (VWO) level, are exempt from the English language proficiency test requirement.
The Master's programme in Economics has been legally accredited by the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). This means that upon successful completion of the programme, students will receive a legally accredited Master's degree in Economics and the title of Master of Science (MSc).
