The Master of Science in Economics has a strong international emphasis and offers a wide range of specialisations ranging from theoretical to applied.

Students in the programme can choose between a degree programme in general economics or in a specialised field of economics.

Graduates of the Master's programme in Economics have excellent job prospects for positions as researchers and administrators in:

  • international organisations such as the IMF, World Bank, OECD, ECB and other European Community institutions;
  • ministries and government agencies (ministries of finance and economic affairs, economic forecasting agencies, competition authorities and central banks);
  • employer and employee organisations, consumer organisations and environmental organisations;
  • banks;
  • multinational corporations.

Programme structure

The Master of Science in Economics is a one-year programme of 60 ECTS credits (1 ECTS credit = 0,5 US credit). The course schedule is listed below. The academic year runs from September to the beginning of July and is divided into two semesters, each with three blocks. Please refer to the academic calendar for the exact dates.

First semester

In the first block students will get a solid economical basis by attending the core courses Microeconomics & Game Theory, Macroeconomics and Applied Econometrics. During this first block students will choose their specialisation or track and in the second part of the first semester they will enroll in the first three track specific courses.

Second semester

In the first block of the second semester students specialize further by attending two track specific courses. At the same time students will prepare themselves for their thesis which they will complete in the last part of the second semester.

Thesis

The Master's thesis is the final requirement to be completed prior to graduation. It will be supervised by one of the economic researchers from the relevant field.

Degree

Upon successful completion of the programme, students receive a Master's degree in Economics and the title Master of Science (MSc).

Internship

Master's students can also choose to do an internship in order to conduct research for their final thesis. This offers the opportunity to conduct research in a company or organization on an academic level. Interested students should contact the Internship Office.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

1) Academic Bachelor degree

Applicants are expected to hold a Bachelor‘s or Master‘s degree in Economics, or to have taken economics as a major subject. Students are expected to have taken a course in econometrics or extended quantitative methods at the undergraduate or graduate level.

All students with a Bachelor of Science degree from the UvA in General Economics will automatically be admitted. Students with a similar degree from another university are eligible to apply for admission. 2) Motivation and initiative

Applicants are expected to have the intrinsic motivation to test and build upon this knowledge. Coursework is designed in keeping with this expectation and demands significant personal initiative and an active contribution on the part of the student.

3) English language proficiency

We require evidence of English language proficiency:

  • Minimum score TOEFL test: 92, at least 20 on each sub-score (237 computer-based/580 paper-based test, reporting number 0398)
  • Minimum score IELTS-test: 6.5, at least 6 on each sub-score
  • Minimum score Cambridge International Examinations: A (FCE), A/B (CAE), B (CPE)

Applicants who took English at the Dutch pre-university secondary education (VWO) level or at the German secondary education (Abitur) level are exempt from the English language requirement. For more information on test procedures and exemptions see the link below.

4) GRE

A GRE test is compulsory for all applicants to the programme in Economics. For detailed information about the GRE test please refer to the link below. The institution code for GRE is 6739, Amsterdam Business School.

In the following cases we also accept a GMAT test:

- if you have already obtained a GMAT score
- if in your country it is difficult to take the GRE test on a short notice (e.g. China, Taiwan)

Accreditation

The Master's programme in Economics has been legally accredited by the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). This means that upon successful completion of the programme, students will receive a legally accredited Master's degree in Economics and the title of Master of Science (MSc).

Funding details

Huygens scholarship

The Dutch government has allocated a vast amount for excellent students coming to the Netherlands under the HSP Huygens Programme. The Nuffic is administrating the Huygens scholarship. Please find all all necessary information about application and selection on their website.

! The Faculty deadline for receiving Huygens scholarship requests is: 31 December 2010. On the online application form please mention the Huygens scholarship request by thicking the relevant box.

The International Office will make a first selection of most excellent students. For this students we will write a nomination letter. Applicants that are part of this selection will receive the nomination letter by e-mail before 1 February 2011 which is the Nuffic deadline for application.

Amsterdam Merit Scholarship

The Faculty of Economics and Business provides a limited number of scholarships for excellent students in the Master's programmes. There is no fixed number of available scholarships. The actual number will be determined by the amount that will be allocated to the Faculty.

Selection procedure

1) Applicants should write an AMS motivation letter (tell us in not more than 300 words your motivation to get the scholarship).

2) Applicants should upload the AMS digital motivation letter to their online application for the MSc programme before March 1st 2011.

3) Before the end of May 2011 we will inform all applicants about the results by e-mail.

Ahold Scholarship Programme

Ahold, an international food retailing group based in the Netherlands offers scholarships for non-EU students in the MSc in Accountancy and Control programme. Applicants should have an outstanding academic record and have special interest in retail and the intention to work and live in the USA or Europe after graduation. All non-EU applicants accepted to the MSc in Accountancy and Control programme will receive supplementary information on this Scholarship.

Colfuturo Scholarship

Students from Columbia can apply for this scholarship through their website.

Ford Foundation Scholarship

Scholarships are provided for students from a selection of countries worldwide. For more information see the Nuffic website.

Netherlands Fellowship Programmes

This programme provides funding for women and members of priority groups or marginalized regions. For more information see the Nuffic website.
