The programme is ideal for those wishing to pursue a career in finance and for established finance professionals who want to enhance their career prospects.

The Master's programme in International Finance (MIF) provides students with high-quality, thorough training in the theoretical and practical aspects of international finance. While courses are practice-oriented rather than academically-oriented, the programme maintains high academic standards and students learn about state of the art research in relevant areas. Graduates go on to work in areas that require thorough understanding of the complexities of international finance, such as asset management, corporate finance, project finance and treasury.

Contents

The MIF introduces you to cutting-edge developments in international corporate finance, asset management, banking, and risk management. The course curriculum aims to prepare students for a professional rather than an academic career. Nevertheless, high academic standards are maintained and students are introduced to the most recent research in the respective areas. At the same time, experts from the financial services industry are regularly involved in the development of the courses and as guest lecturers, thus guaranteeing that the curriculum has a high degree of practical relevance. All courses are conducted in English.

The MIF allows you to study full-time over a period of 12 months or part-time over a period of 18-24 months.

Calendar

The MIF course programme starts around mid-August and ends around mid-June (full-time programme). The academic year is divided into two semesters, each consisting of two main blocks. Each of these blocks consists of 6 weeks of classes, one study week, and one exam week. The course programme is followed by a master thesis project and potentially an internship. In January, MIF students embark for a one-week international study trip. In past years, the study trip took place in Cape Town, South Africa.

Curriculum

The MIF course programme consists of

  • 8 MIF core courses (32 EC)
  • 3 MIF electives (12 EC)
  • MIF Leadership Programme (3 EC)
  • Finance Research Workshop (3 EC)

In addition to the required number of MIF electives, you have the option to take up to two additional courses from the portfolio of MIF electives or, subject to availability, the MBA curriculum. The final graduation requirement is a master thesis research project (15 EC).

Successful completion of the programme leads to a Master of Science (MSc) in International Finance from the University of Amsterdam.

MIF Leadership Programme

The MIF Leadership Programme is an integral part of the MIF curriculum. It consists of the International Study Trip and the workshop "Financial Ethics and Governance". We also offer a series of workshops devoted to career and job market skills for both full-time and part-time students.

MIF Pre-Course Training (Summer Online Course)

Depending on your academic background, you may be required to complete part or all of the MIF pre-course training. The MIF pre-course training takes place during the summer months before the start of the regular course programme. It brings you up to speed with Fundamentals of Finance, Financial Accounting, and Quantitative Methods & Research Skills. The courses are facilitated through a tailor-made online learning platform. Please check the admission requirements to find out if you need to complete the pre-course training.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
