Graduate from the UK´s only Centre for Excellence in Media Practice and a recognised Skillset Screen and Media Academy. Radio is undergoing enormous changes both in the way it is created and in the way we listen to it. The development of DAB, Internet Radio and Podcasting bring with them opportunities for reaching new audiences and for using sound in fresh, exciting ways. At the same time the chance to operate low-budget, small-scale community stations puts this powerful tool in the hands of charities and companies seeking to reach local audiences directly and professionally. We aim to offer you the skills to work in radio and audio production in an industry where an understanding of a variety of media and platforms is increasingly important.
This award winning, highly practical course is designed for graduates and practising professionals from a range of disciplines, including freelancers seeking to move into independent production and community groups, as well as overseas students keen to explore radio broadcasting in their own countries. A key aspect of the course is its attention to new technologies including digital editing and mixing and exploration of the possibilities afforded by the Internet. Students operate an Internet radio station, BIRSt enabling them to gain 'hands-on' experience of scheduling, managing and running a radio station.
MA Radio Production is part of the Media School´s portfolio of production MAs. Students will develop the skills to produce radio programmes and audio content (e.g. podcasts) and they will also work on projects in teams with students in other disciplines such as scriptwriting and interactive media.
The course is made up of five elements:

* Radio production and theory
* Radio marketing and regulation
* Advanced radio and audio production
* Cross platform practice
* The Masters Project (Production or Research)

Students on the course use the latest sound recording, editing and studio equipment. The Media School has an excellent reputation for its resources and these include industry standard radio studios and sound editing facilities.

Contents

Radio Production and Theory

A large part of this course is devoted to practical exercises in programme making, both as an individual and as part of a production team, which will include familiarisation with a range of technical equipment, including digital editing and mixing of programmes. Students also study the historical development of radio and radio genres and discuss theoretical issues to do with radio and sound.

Radio Marketing and Regulation

This unit addresses the commercial aspects of radio production and in particular the commercial radio station and its marketing and branding. The regulation of radio is also studied and the ethical underpinning of that regulation and the work of the radio professional.

Advanced radio and audio production

Students develop their radio and audio production skills and make longer and more ambitious pieces. They also launch the course internet radio station BIRSt.

Cross Platform Practice

The media industry is constantly changing. This unit aims to ensure students graduate with a set of skills to enable them to prosper and succeed in the industry. Students study the current debates and trends in the industry in relation to cross-platform commissioning and production. Students will evaluate a range of theoretical and practical tools by applying them to brands that can be explored and exploited across different media platforms.

The Masters Production Project

This is where students can create a complete 30 minute radio programme of broadcast standard. Students plan and produce a project, the nature of which is negotiated with a tutor. Using the facilities of the Media School and regular one-to-one tutorials with current radio practitioners, students produce a complete programme which can then be used as part of their show-reel for future employers.

The Masters Research Project

As an alternative to the Masters Production Project, students can choose either a research-focused option, where they produce a practice-based research artefact supported by a written analysis, or an individual or collaboratively written paper. Both practice-based research and research papers will be the basis of a presentation of research findings at a final exhibition.
