The programme in Discourse and Argumentation Studies aims to provide students with a solid foundation for understanding the way language is used for informative and argumentative purposes.
The programme presents an overview of descriptive and normative research in language use covering conversational analysis, style, classical and modern rhetoric, informal logic, fallacies and juridical and conversational argument. Students will acquire knowledge of and insight into the main normative and theoretical approaches to the study of argumentation. This includes: Pragma-dialectics and the main theoretical approaches to the study of discourse, including speech act theory and conversation analysis. Students also gain the skills needed to analyse argumentative discourse, to read, evaluate and research and produce both written and oral reports on findings. The programme is unique in the way it combines courses in discourse analysis and argumentation theory. It was conceived and is taught by scholars who applied insights from these two fields to develop and extend the approach to the study of argumentative discourse known as Pragma-Dialectics.
This programme has several key objectives. First it aims to give students a general introduction to the field of discourse and argumentation studies. It also gives them the opportunity to gain practical experience in the descriptive and normative analysis of argumentative discourse. Building on this foundation, the programme provides students with more specialised and profound knowledge of and insight into the fields of discourse analysis and argumentation theory. Finally, the programme offers students the tools necessary for conducting independent evaluations and research in the field of discourse and argumentation studies.
The programme yields 90 ECTS credits: 72 credits for core courses and internships, and 18 credits for a thesis. The core courses and electives depend on the student's previous qualifications. The choice of courses is subject to the approval of the academic adviser.
The specific number of credits a student is required to obtain through coursework is determined by the admissions committee and is based on the student's previous qualifications. Given the unique character of this programme and its advanced level, students should plan on needing one-and-a-half years to fulfil all the requirements.
The thesis reports on research are carried out by the student under the supervision of two academic staff members involved in the programme. The subject of the thesis must be mutually agreed upon by the student and the academic adviser(s).
Discourse and Argumentation Studies is a programme in Communication and Information Studies. Students who successfully complete this programme receive a Master's degree in Communication and Information Studies and the title Master of Arts (MA).
Students who show exceptional promise during a Regular or Professional programme are encouraged to continue their studies in a Research programme. Once students are admitted to the Research programme, they can transfer credits earned during their previous course of study towards their Research programme degree. The examination committee determines which courses qualify for transfer.
