In this programme students investigate the nature of Europe and the development of the idea of Europe that ultimately led to the founding of the European Union.

This programme aims to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of modern European integration, history and culture. The compulsory core course examines the internal and external relations of the EU in the context of contemporary events and politics. In addition, students can chose from various electives that focus on a range of topics: EU cultural policy; the history of European unity; and expressions of European identity, both inside Europe and in relation to 'the Other', such as the Orient or Islam. Upon completion of the programme, students will have gained insight into various aspects of European identity and integration, and will have the necessary skills to conduct independent research on a relevant topic. Upon successful completion of the programme students will receive Master of Arts (MA) degree.

Programme outline

The Identity and Integration programme yields 60 ECTS credits: 18 credits for core courses, 24 credits for electives and 18 credits for a Master's thesis.

Thesis

The master's thesis (18 credits) is an individual research project carried out by the student under the supervision of two faculty members. The subject of the thesis should relate to topics covered in the courses and will be mutually agreed upon by the student and the main supervisor. The thesis should be started during the student's first semester and should be completed at the end of the student's second semester.

Programmes of European Studies

Apart from the one-year English-taught European Studies programme, students can choose three other European Studies programmes (taught in Dutch). These programmes are:

  • Europees beleid (European Policy)
  • Europese studies (European Studies)
  • Oost-Europese studies (Eastern-European Studies)

Degree requirements

The one-year programme European Studies: Identity and Integration is a Master's programme in European Studies. Students who successfully complete this programme receive a Master's degree in European Studies and the title Master of Arts (MA).

Credit transfer

Students who show exceptional promise during a Regular or Professional Master's programme are encouraged to continue their studies in a Research Master's programme. Once students are admitted to the Research Master's programme, they can transfer credits earned during their previous course of study towards their Research Master's degree. The examination committee determines which courses qualify for transfer.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
