This course has been designed for students that wish to pursue a research career or have relevant experience and would like to take up a large project in the Smart Systems and Technology subject area. This programme will be suitable for graduates who wish to follow an academic research path, possibly leading to a PhD, or who would like to move into a career in industrial research or project management.
Smart Technology specialists need to be able to work in a broad range of application domains, and at the same time cope with the narrow and extremely high-level demands associated with very complex projects. This programme will encourage you to recognise the tension between depth and breadth and develop skills to handle different situations. You will face the challenge of applying skills gained in a specific application domain and specialising in a narrow area in considerable depth.
The programme aims to provide you with a fully flexible learning experience, as you choose your own course content from a rich set of electronics and communications subject areas.
The research programme comprises of three taught units and an extended (120 credit) project. The extended project offers the opportunity to explore a specific chosen area of Smart Technology in greater depth, engaging in critical evaluation of the state-of-the-art and empirical or theoretical research to an extent that is not possible within the timescales of a traditional 60 credit project. The programme offers the opportunity to prepare for roles in research and development, or for further academic research programmes, and develops a range of intellectual and transferable skills in
addition to specific subject expertise.
The programme emphasis is on the ability to use design abstractions, and apply them with rigour to deliver smart technology solutions. Drawing on research and recent advances in smart systems you will gain critical awareness of current problems in the area. This will help you to develop systematic, original and creative intellectual skills in problem solution. You will also learn to plan and manage research projects to create and interpret electronic and communications knowledge and to
report it to professional standards.
