There has never been a better time to embark on a postgraduate course in Tourism. The ease of booking on the internet, the emergence of low-cost airline carriers and the rise of budget hotels have created interesting challenges and opportunities throughout the industry. It is an industry that employs over 234 million people, generating around US$6.5 billion per year.
This course has been designed to meet the needs of industry managers, executives and other professionals both for the present and the future. You will develop your management, research and analytical skills to a standard that will allow you to operate at a high level within the industry. It is delivered by staff who are actively involved in research and consultancy, ensuring that the curriculum and discussions are informed by both industry and academia - including the likes of Professor Dimitrios Buhalis, Professor John Fletcher, Professor Adam Blake and Professor Adele Ladkin.
The make-up of the course is truly international, giving you a unique opportunity to mix with a diverse range of nationalities, allowing you to increase your intercultural competence – vital preparation for working in a mixed-nationality workforce or dealing with a mixed-nationality clientele.
We welcome students on this course for both full-time and part-time study.
For those wishing to complete the course on a part-time basis, the course is over two years. Students will be expected to study a minimum of three units per year, plus their dissertation towards the end of their second year. The timetable of when the units take place vary each year, however, the units are timetabled during daytime hours, and will be studied with fellow full-time and part-time students.
Core Units
This unit will provide you with an introduction to the general principles and main components of tourism. It is international in nature, drawing on examples and practices from both developed and developing countries. It will provide you with an appreciation of the study of tourism as a domain within its own right.
This unit focuses on developing an in-depth understanding of the foundations of strategic analysis, strategic choice and related implementation strategies that usually tie into a corporation’s business decisions. It also includes a study of corporate finance within the context of an organisation’s sources of finance, reporting and the interpretation of financial data. This is fundamental to the broader understanding of the dynamics of leisure-based industry sectors such as tourism, hospitality, events, sports and leisure.
This unit will enable you to develop competence in the areas of human resource management and organisational behaviour appropriate to the development of a career in management in the service industries. It focuses on the ‘effective manager’ by investigating the key roles and functions of service industry managers and how these may be affected by the structure and culture of the operating environment, particularly in international and multinational organisations. You will explore the effective deployment, development and evaluation of human resources and investigate the inter-relationships between organisational roles, cultures and resource allocation in organisations.
