Tourism development needs to be planned and managed to ensure that it is economically viable. Equally, the needs of the visitor have to be recognised and understood, and the environmental constraints have to be assessed along with the needs of the host population. Achieving a sustainable balance of these demands requires careful planning.
The make-up of the course is truly international, giving you a unique opportunity to mix with a diverse range of nationalities, allowing you to increase your intercultural competence – vital preparation for working in a mixed-nationality workforce or dealing with a mixed-nationality clientele. This course focuses on public and private sector planning by critically reviewing approaches to, and management of, tourism development. It will provide you with a critical awareness of the value and benefits of planning for tourism, as well as a knowledge of the different approaches and the rationale behind them. The course incorporates a rigorous introduction to the economic, environmental and social impacts of tourism.
You will develop skills to successfully evaluate and manage tourism and its infrastructure. You’ll also acquire the ability to develop and manage tourism destinations so they achieve long-term success and make a positive contribution to the destination and its environment.
Your study will be practical and specific, including an optional 30-week work placement.
