Location of University of Amsterdam

Housed within the largest Faculty of Humanities in the Netherlands, this programme offers students the study of religion in a broad context, as well as opportunities for interdisciplinary studies.

The one-year Master's programme in Religious Studies offers a wide range of possibilities for the study of religious texts, traditions and practices and their interactions with various cultures, from a literary, historical and/or social sciences perspective. The general track described here is primarily explorative in character. It offers students from other disciplines a broad and cohesive programme of study. Housed within the largest Faculty of Humanities in the Netherlands, this programme is able to offer students the opportunity to study religion in a broad context, as well as unique opportunities for specialisation and interdisciplinary studies. In addition to the general track, specialisations are currently offered in: Western Esotericism Islam in de moderne wereld (in Dutch only)

Contents

The programme consists of a combination of core courses, electives, tutorials and a thesis. The general track allows for a combination of courses from other specialisations together with other courses in the humanities.

Programme outline

The Master's programme in Religious Studies yields 60 ECTS credits: 42 credits for core courses, electives and tutorials and 18 credits for a Master's thesis.

The specific number of credits a student is required to obtain through coursework is determined by the admissions committee and is based on the student's previous qualifications. Fulfilment of all the requirements will take at least one year.

Specialisations

Students in the Master's programme in Religious Studies can choose the following English-taught specialisations:

  • Biblical Studies
  • Religious Pluralism in Europe

Thesis

The Master's thesis reports on research carried out by the student under the supervision of two academic staff members involved in the programme. The subject of the thesis must be mutually agreed upon by the student and the academic adviser(s). Researching and writing the thesis should take at least ten full weeks. The final text should contain between 20,000 and 25,000 words.

Degree requirements

Students who successfully complete this programme receive a Master's degree in Theology and Religious Studies and the title Master of Arts (MA).

Credit transfer

Students who show exceptional promise during a Regular or Professional Master's programme are encouraged to continue their studies in a Research Master's programme. Once students are admitted to the Research Master's programme, they can transfer credits earned during their previous course of study towards their Research Master's degree. The examination committee determines which courses qualify for transfer.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
