Queen Mary has led the field in biomaterials teaching and research for over 20 years. This degree is aimed at people with conventional materials expertise who wish to facilitate their development into the biomaterials field. The programme is designed to provide a good level of understanding and appreciation of the principles and applications of biomaterials and medical devices.
Biomedical Material Sciences involves tailor making of materials for medical applications. Examples of these applications include artificial skin, vascular and cardiovascular implants and devices, bone graft substitutes, new prosthetic devices, dental materials, biosensors, controlled drug delivery etc. Application in this field have been rapidly expanding, as it depends on the imagination of a biomedical material scientist and identifying appropriate applications in consultation with the clinicians. Hence, a marriage made in heaven between the clinicians and non-clinical researchers.
Recently, materials used in medicine (biomaterials) have made enormous impact on the repair and replacement of injured and diseased part of the human body and the field is growing with a rapid pace.
This long established programme will equip you with both theoretical and applied knowledge of biomaterials. Technological advances, as well as methodological issues, have contributed to the transformation of biomaterials and their functions. The course will provide an insight into areas of material science, biocompatibility, ethical issues, nanomaterials, and biological systems. The course is interdisciplinary in nature and involves a combination of theoretical and practical approaches.
Core modules:
* Materials Research Techniques (two modules)
* Biomaterials and Biomechanics
* Application of Biomaterials
* Materials Selection and Design
* Advanced Topics in Biomaterials
* Research Project (four modules)
Option modules may include:
* Advanced Ceramics
* Materials and the Environment
* Composites
* Rheology and Structural Properties of Advanced Materials
* Nanotechnology and Advanced Functional Materials
* Dental Materials
Methods of assessment include coursework and formal examinations. Many modules will include continuous assessment. The MSc Research Project will be conducted under close supervision during the summer term and is evaluated by thesis, presentation and viva examination.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testUndergraduate honours degree (minimum 2:2 or equivalent) in Materials Science, Engineering, or a related discipline. Each application is individually assessed; you are recommended to write for guidance in specific cases.
