Biomedical Engineering applies the principles of science and engineering to biological and medical problems. It has applications in a variety of fields from the design, development and operation of complex medical devices used in diagnosis and treatment, to the development of software products and theoretical models that enhance the understanding of complex issues in the biomedical area. The aim of this course is to allow students with a strong engineering background to develop their knowledge in this new field to an advanced level, in both experimental and computational areas, allowing them to participate in the advancement of knowledge and technology in this area.
Biomedical engineering is a new and rapidly developing field of engineering that relies on inter- and multidisciplinary approach to research and development. Specialists in this area face problems that differ significantly from the more traditional branches of engineering. However, at the same time biomedical engineering relies on methodologies and techniques developed in the more traditional engineering fields that are further developed and adapted to the particular specifications of the biomedical applications. The programme aims to prepare specialists with advanced skills in computational modelling, numerical techniques and in depth understanding in engineering approaches to biological problems. Students completing this programme will be able to develop novel computational and technology products for the biomedical industries.
On completion of the programme the postgraduates would have acquired extensive knowledge in the areas of computational solid and fluid mechanics with a focus on biomedical applications such as biomechanics, bio-fluids, tissue engineering. Students will achieve in depth understanding of the underlying theoretical issues and the technology developments in biomedical areas. The MSc programme provides the graduating students with in-depth knowledge for biomedical problems using advanced computational and theoretical apparatus and in-depth understanding of development cycle of novel biomedical technologies and able to contribute in advanced design developments.
Biomedical engineering represents a fast growing industry supported by many educational programmes worldwide. The faculty at Queen Mary is working closely with both European and US initiatives in this area.

Contents
