The MSc Computing degree is a flexible programme suitable for students with a wide range of computing backgrounds. Whether you have only a general familiarity with computers, or programming experience from a science degree, or a Computing degree, you can tailor this degree programme to suit you.

We encourage a professional, inter-disciplinary and user-centred approach to software design and production, and will enable you to develop the skills so that you can undertake a major software development project.

Aims of the Programmme:

This degree programme aims to give students a Masters-level postgraduate education in the knowledge, skills and understanding of computing and software development to enable them to operate effectively in the application of computing in industry, commerce or research.


Contents

You select six taught modules, three per semester, during the period September-April. You will make module selections with your advisor, and this will be partially dictated by your background and previous study. The typical list for students with limited computing background is shown *. Any module which has a significant overlap with your previous education will be disallowed, for students with a computing-related degree this will usually include most of the modules shown +.

Semester 1 (Sept-Dec)

Three modules from:

- Internet and Computer Systems* +

- Software Development* +

- Software Engineering* +

- Design Ethnography 1

- Agile Engineering

- Technology Innovation Management

- Secure e-Commerce

- Computer Graphics

- Computer Vision

- Multimedia Audio

Semester 2 (Jan-Mar)

Three modules from:

- Database Systems* +

- Advanced Programming Techniques* +

- Human Computer Interaction*

- Internet Programming

- Research Frontiers

- Design Ethnography 2

Or two from the above list plus one from:

- Research Methods

- Designing Innovative Research

Subject to examination performance, you then progress to the MSc project which runs from May to September, or to a Diploma project lasting 9 weeks.

Methods of Assessment:

The taught modules are assessed by continuous assessment plus end of semester examinations in December and March/April. The project is assessed by dissertation.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

You should have, or expect to have an Honours degree at 2.2 level or above in Computing, Information Technology, Information Systems, Software Engineering or related title, or equivalent qualifications.

English Language Requirement: IELTS of 6.0 (or equivalent), if your first language is not English.
