THIS COURSE HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO MEET THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT NEEDS OF THOSE WISHING TO DEVELOP A MANAGEMENT ROLE IN THE ARTS AND CULTURAL SECTORS.

QMU offers three awards focusing on cultural management:
- MBA Cultural Management
- MA Arts and Cultural Management
- MA Festival Management
Each award focuses on different aspects of arts and cultural management, which is reflected in the combination of modules within each award. The course is developed in co-operation with key national cultural agencies and other bodies with a strategic interest in the development of the arts and cultural sectors across Scotland and there are strong practical links between the cultural management programme and many local and national organisations in the cultural industry sector.
MA ARTS AND CULTURAL MANAGEMENT
This course will stimulate your understanding and develop your knowledge of contemporary issues affecting the development of arts and cultural management and their relevance to daily practice. The modules are:
- Introduction to the cultural sector
- People management, governance and law
- Research methods for business
- Production and project management
- Strategic management and policy
- Finance and fundraising
- Arts marketing and public relations
- Placement or independent study
There will be a dissertation or project module to attain the full MA.
MA FESTIVAL MANAGEMENT
This course will provide you with knowledge of the current issues in the production of festivals. On completion you will be able to demonstrate an ability to analyse and understand issues as well as implement the policies underlying the production, programming and management of festivals. The modules are:
- Introduction to the cultural sector
- People management, governance and law
- Research methods for business
- Festivals
- Strategic management and policy
- Finance and fundraising
- Arts marketing and public relations
- Placement or independent study
There will be a dissertation or project module to attain the full MA.


Contents

Structure

Teaching is comprised of a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, case studies, simulation exercises, field trips and projects. The methods used vary from module to module. Your performance on the course will be assessed by essays, reports, presentations and a dissertation or project (MA only).

Teaching and Assessment

The main forms of assessment are written assignments, case study presentations and practical performance (placement and QMU-situated).

Careers

You will be qualified to work in a management or research role within
the arts and cultural sector. You will be able to use modules, or the whole course, as part of your personal and professional development. Previous students work in galleries & museums; theatres, festivals & performing arts organisations; and local councils, arts councils and related cultural agencies across the world.

Associate Student

You can also register as an associate student to study single modules in areas of interest.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Honours degree or relevant industrial experience and education

Language Requirements

You are required to have a 6.0 IELTS score (and at least 5.5 in all levels) and 580 in TOEFL paper test and 237 in computer based test. If your primary language has been English you may be exempt the above test scores.
