THE MSC IN PALLIATIVE CARE OFFERS AN INTERDISCIPLINARY PROGRAMME OF STUDIES FOR HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE PROFESSIONALS WORKING WITH PATIENTS AND FAMILIES REQUIRING PALLIATIVE CARE.
This course has been developed in partnership with St Columba's Hospice by an interdisciplinary planning team. It has been designed to prepare experienced practitioners from all disciplines involved in the care of patients and families at the end of life for advanced roles in palliative care. The course is based on the belief that palliative care is, by definition, interdisciplinary and therefore requires interdisciplinary education. The specialist components of the programme are taught at St Columba´s Hospice.
Students on this programme will normally be working with patients and families in the palliative care phase of illness, with most individuals already following a career path. This programme will help you develop personally and professionally, offering opportunities for career progression in a palliative care context.
The course is modular and can only be studied on a part-time basis. To ensure flexibility it has
been designed so that you can exit with:
- An MSc (8 modules and the work-based dissertation)
- A PgDip (8 modules)
- A PgCert (4 modules)
Course Covers
Core modules:
- Shadows and horizons: developing palliative care practice
- Developing advanced communication skills in palliative care
- Supporting the patient and family in palliative care: a team approach
If you have a clinical role you will also be required to do one of the symptom control modules:
- Working with people with complex pain and symptoms
or
- An integrated approach to breathlessness in palliative care
For the PgDip and MSc you are required to do at least one core research module and there are elective modules on practice, management and education themes. The final four modules of the MSc consist of a work-based dissertation, which enables you to gain academic credit for planning, implementing and evaluating a significant, evidence-based development in the work place that contributes to advancing palliative care practice.
