THIS PROGRAMME WILL ENTITLE YOU TO APPLY TO THE HIGHER EDUCATION ACADEMY AND PROFESSIONAL COUNCIL FOR REGISTRATION AS A TEACHER.
This dynamic, interactive and highly work-related course has been designed in response to the continuing professional development needs of educators in the work place and higher education including: nurses and midwives; allied health professionals; doctors; lecturers in higher, further and community education; librarians and police trainers. You will have the opportunity to work and study with a range of professionals to explore experiences of learning. The course is collaborative and involves specialist lecturers from across the schools within the University, with main contributors being the Centre for Academic Practice and the School of Health Sciences (Nursing).
Careers
The PgCert, which is accredited by the HE Academy and the NMC, will enable you to teach in higher education. Accreditation by other professional bodies may allow you to record a teaching qualification with your profession. The PgCert will attract a broad spectrum of adult educators who are interested n developing skills of facilitation and teaching. The PgDip extends the breadth and depth of study in professional education and enables the development of research-based and enquiry based skills. The MSc allows participants to specialise in an area of interest and further develop their knowledge and skills of educational research and enquiry.
This flexible course can be studied on a full-time or part-time basis. Modules will be offered in block release, as well as day release sessions. For the Postgraduate Certificate, you will complete four modules (three core modules and one elective module) worth 60 credits. The Postgraduate Diploma requires a further 60 credits (two core modules including research methods (30 credits) and either one or two elective modules or three core modules for the MSc route). The MSc requires the completion of another 60 credits through a dissertation/project equivalent to four single modules.
Teaching and Assessment
You will learn through group discussion, teaching practice, challenge and debate, collaborative case analysis and independent study. Emphasis is placed on building on your own personal experience. Assessment includes personal critiques, portfolios and seminar presentations, essays, curriculum documents and literature reviews.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testYou must be educated to first degree level and will normally be an honours graduate or equivalent. You must have access to an adult (16+) learning environment. During the core 'Education in Action' module, there is a requirement for teaching practice. You should be able to demonstrate, on application, that you have an existing teaching role within your place of work or that alternative arrangements can be made through your employer or a higher education institution that will facilitate your teaching practice. In addition, for qualified Nurses or Midwives you must have:
* current first-level professional registration, which is effectively entered on the register maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC);
* evidence of professional post-registration experience and
* access to appropriate practice/ clinical area that will allow candidates to meet the outcomes of the course.
Students whose first language is not English must provide evidence of English language proficiency of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent
