FIELD OF DIETETICS AND LEADS TO ELIGIBILITY TO APPLY FOR
REGISTRATION WITH THE HEALTH PROFESSIONS COUNCIL
Dietetics is the management of diseases that are amenable to dietary intervention and the prevention of nutrition related disorders. A dietitian influences food selection and eating behaviour of an individual based on specific nutritional or food requirements. This course takes you through a clinical and health promotion-focused
course and includes three blocks of integrated practice placements within a hospital and/or primary care settings. Successful students will be eligible to apply to the Health Professions Council for Registration as a dietitian.
Careers
Career prospects on completion of the course are varied. Most graduates are expected to work within the National Health Service as dietitians. Others will work in health education, health promotion, general practice, private healthcare and government advisory posts. Opportunities also exist in the food and pharmaceutical industries in, for example:
- food labelling;
- nutrient profiling;
- product and recipe development;
- product evaluation and
- special diet foods.
The course is modular and normally studied on a full-time basis. Studying full-time, you will normally undertake four modules in semester one and four modules in semester two, and complete a dissertation (MSc only). A part-time route may be available; however practice placements are currently only offered on a full-time basis. The course is based at QMU but is integrated with periods of practical training. Semester one and semester two are taught programmes of study with heavy emphasis on 'student-centred' learning. Semester three and semester four are spent in practice placements (predominately in Scotland) with 'touchdown' consolidation tutorials at QMU between placements. Semester five is entirely devoted to the execution and assessment of a Masters Project or Dissertation (MSc only).

Teaching and Assessment
The emphasis is on independent problem-based learning where your previous knowledge and skills are used to develop your new subject areas. Learning activities are guided using web-based intranet materials.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testA good honours degree (normally an upper second class honours degree, or above) that includes significant emphasis on human biochemistry and physiology. Students whose first language is not English, must provide evidence of English language proficiency of IELTS 7 or equivalent.
