Comparative Organisation and Labour Studies covers the sociological and interdisciplinary understanding of employment relations, the organisation of work and the position of labour in wider society.
The programme in Comparative Organisation and Labour Studies covers the sociological and interdisciplinary understanding of employment relations, the organisation of work processes and the position of labour in the wider society. It has two distinctive features: a strong focus on comparative analysis of issues concerning labour and organisation and a special emphasis on processes of integration and convergence in world markets of both employment relations and organisational policies. It offers a sociological approach to the study of modern capitalism by investigating cross-national differences of the institutional framework of market economies. It contributes to an understanding of the changing world of labour market institutions ranging from work-place practice, andover union-employer bargaining to national welfare states and European social policies. The programme also explores the institutional, cultural, social, and historical determinants of economic behaviour by looking at issues such as the regulations and norms in the labour market, informal norms in firms, and the effect of institutional path dependency on social capital, trust and networks.
Contents
This programme starts in September.
The programme (60 ECTS) starts with a theory course in Sociological Perspectives and a Thematic Core Course which is part of the track. In the second block students follow an elective preferably relevant to the topic of the thesis. The first semester ends with an intensive Winter School in methods. Different courses are offered in both quantitative and qualitative methodoloy. In the second semester, students start with a second elective and a thesis seminar in which they will write their research proposal. Throughout the academic year students are enrolled for a lecture series, preparing students for the labour market.
The programme is concluded with a Master's thesis (23 ECTS credits). Fulfilling the requirements should take one year of full-time study.
Students who need to complete a preparatory programme will require more time, the amount of which will depend on the extra requirements to be fulfilled.
Thesis
The Master's thesis (23 ECTS credits) is a report on research that focuses on a topic in the field of Comparative Organisation and Labour Studies, in which theoretical insights and the analysis of empirical data are integrated. It is carried out by the students under the supervision of two faculty members. The subject of the thesis is to be mutually agreed upon by the student and the academic adviser. The thesis should be between 16,000 and 24,000 words.
Degree requirements
The Master of Science degree (60 ECTS) is awarded only after successful completion of both the course requirements and the Master's thesis.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Previous education: Students who have obtained a Bachelor's degree in Sociology can be admitted to the programme, provided that they have completed 6 EC in the field of organisation and labour studies. Students with an academic Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in a social sciences discipline closely related to the programme (including economics and psychology) are invited to apply, provided that they meet the entry requirements as specified. International diplomas are evaluated on the basis of advice from professional diploma evaluators. The minimum level of the diploma should be equivalent to three years of Dutch university education. Language test: All students must be able to read textbooks, understand lectures, take part in classroom discussions and undertake written work in English. All applicants who are nationals of countries other than the United States, Australia, United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland or New Zealand are required to submit an English test score that meets specific requirements. Inability to do so will prevent enrollment. Applicants of the College of Social Sciences (CSW) of the University of Amsterdam who have successfully completed the CSW course in Academic English or have obtained a sufficient level during the entrance test of the course, are exempted from submitting an English language test score. Additional subject: All applicants are expected to have a solid basis in the field of sociological theory and social sciences research methodology, evenly distributed across (an equivalent of) 60 EC at least, earned during previous study. At least (an equivalent of) 6 EC of sociological theory is expected to be taken in the field of organisation and labour studies.
