The Conflict Resolution and Governance programme provides students with a theoretical basis for analysing conflicts and the relationship of these conflicts to concerns for democratic governance.
The Conflict Resolution and Governance programme provides students with a theoretical basis for analysing conflicts and the relationship of these conflicts to concerns for democratic governance. The case-oriented approach helps students to develop skills and experience through the analysis of action in settings that are grounded in comparative and historical perspectives. Students gain the ability to apply different theoretical orientations to make sense of the range of global, regional and local influences that shape conflicts and their relationship to governance. The programme's ambition is to develop students' capacity to draw on the most vexing features of contemporary conflicts to form governance regimes from the fabric of local crisis.
Contents
This programme starts in September. The curriculum consists of three core courses, an elective and a research project. The choice of courses is subject to the approval of the academic adviser. Fulfilling the requirements should take one year of full-time study. Students who need to complete a preparatory programme will require more time, the amount of which will depend on the extra requirements to be fulfilled.
Thesis
The research project (30 ECTS credits) consists of:
- a seminar,
- fieldwork and primary and secondary research,
- a written thesis.
The final Master's thesis is a report on research carried out by the student as part of the research project. The thesis should be between 20,000 and 25,000 words long.
Degree requirements
The Master of Science in Conflict Resolution and Governance degree is awarded upon successful completion of both the course requirements and a written Master's thesis (totally 60 ECTS credits).
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Previous education: The MSc Programme in Conflict Resolution and Governance seeks students with an academic Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in a social sciences discipline closely related to the programme, such as political sciences and international relations. Selection tends to be highly competitive reflecting the number and quality of applications received for each selection round. International diplomas are evaluated on the basis of advice from professional diploma evaluators. The minimum level of the diploma should be equivalent to three years of Dutch university education.
Additional subject: All applicants should have sufficient knowledge of social sciences research methodology reflected by the completion of at least (an equivalent of) 20 ECTS during previous study. Promising candidates with less than 20 ECTS of social science research methodology may be admitted provided they complete an intensiveresearch methodology module first.
Language test: All non-native speakers of English (including Dutch students) applying to one of the English-taught programmes offered by the Graduate School of Social Sciences, are required to demonstrate proficiency in the English language. All students must be able to read textbooks, understand lectures, take part in classroom discussions and undertake written work in English.
Grade average: Study results obtained in previous education should demonstrate that a student is able to attain and maintain a good to excellent level, especially in the field of conflict resolution and governance. Undergraduate studies should be completed with an overall grade average of at least a B/3.0 (American system), second class, lower division Honours degree (British system), C (ECTS system), 7.0 (Dutch system) or equivalent.

Funding details
Huygens scholarship
The Dutch government has allocated a vast amount for excellent students coming to the Netherlands under the HSP Huygens Programme. The Nuffic is administrating the Huygens scholarship. Please find all all necessary information about application and selection on their website.
! The Faculty deadline for receiving Huygens scholarship requests is: 31 December 2010. On the online application form please mention the Huygens scholarship request by thicking the relevant box.
The International Office will make a first selection of most excellent students. For this students we will write a nomination letter. Applicants that are part of this selection will receive the nomination letter by e-mail before 1 February 2011 which is the Nuffic deadline for application.
Amsterdam Merit Scholarship
The Faculty of Economics and Business provides a limited number of scholarships for excellent students in the Master's programmes. There is no fixed number of available scholarships. The actual number will be determined by the amount that will be allocated to the Faculty.
Selection procedure
1) Applicants should write an AMS motivation letter (tell us in not more than 300 words your motivation to get the scholarship).
2) Applicants should upload the AMS digital motivation letter to their online application for the MSc programme before March 1st 2011.
3) Before the end of May 2011 we will inform all applicants about the results by e-mail.
Ahold Scholarship Programme
Ahold, an international food retailing group based in the Netherlands offers scholarships for non-EU students in the MSc in Accountancy and Control programme. Applicants should have an outstanding academic record and have special interest in retail and the intention to work and live in the USA or Europe after graduation. All non-EU applicants accepted to the MSc in Accountancy and Control programme will receive supplementary information on this Scholarship.
