A PROFESSIONAL TRAINING IN COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY

These two MSc courses, delivered by the Counselling and Psychotherapy Training Institute (CPTI) and validated by QMU, are for students who wish to obtain an academic qualification in addition to a professional (practising) qualification in counselling or psychotherapy. Transactional Analysis provides models for cognitive and behavioural change in counselling. As a humanistic relational psychotherapy, Transactional Analysis has the depth to work with people at all levels of disturbance in the short or long term. Transactional Analysis is a theory of personality which integrates models of child development, communication and interpersonal and intrapsychic process. TA is practised in most countries in the world. CPTI is a registered training establishment of the Institute of Transactional Analysis (ITA), the UK professional body for Transactional Analysis. Completion of either of these courses will equip you with academic and professional competencies and enable you to:
- integrate the main areas of Transactional Analysis theory and methodology;
- demonstrate a critical indepth knowledge of counselling and psychotherapy and of specialist practice areas informed by current research and theoretical debate;
- synthesise and integrate findings from clinical practice with established and emerging knowledge within the counselling and psychotherapy fields;
- critically debate, use and justify relevant theories, principles, concepts and philosophy in counselling and psychotherapy.

Careers

It is our expectation that students who start training in counselling and psychotherapy will already be engaged in work. This may be a field allied to counselling or any other work. Obtaining an MSc in counselling or psychotherapy may enhance current career prospects particularly in the area of health, HR and social work. Many successful students take up a career as counsellors or psychotherapists in addition to current work or take up full time work in these areas.

Further Info

Professional Qualifications and Requirements - Both MSc courses have been written to ensure academic qualification and eligibility for recognition as a professional practitioner. Professional requirements include a substantial practice element with the required supervision, personal therapy and, for psychotherapy students, a psychiatric placement. A large part of the practice element is undertaken during the training; entrants to the MSc programme will be expected to have started supervised practice in approved placements during the qualifying training period (see entry requirements). Students with the MSc in TA Counselling will be eligible to apply for accreditation as counsellors with COSCA or equivalent. Accreditation, which gives the counsellor a professional recognition, is subject to completion of COSCA's practice requirements. Those with the MSc in TA Psychotherapy, in conjunction with the CTA professional qualification, are eligible for registration as psychotherapists with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy. Registration with the UKCP as a psychotherapist requires the completion of a professional examination; in respect of Transactional Analysis training this is the CTA. This examination is prepared for in parallel to the preparation of the MSc master's project. The structure of registration and recognition of counselling and psychotherapy may change with the introduction of statutory government registration. All CPTI courses are kept under review to ensure that both the professional and academic standards required will be fully met by our graduates.
